I'm assuming here you are going to a concert at the ampitheater.

Depending where you are starting from, you can either take the F train to Sutphin Boulevard and walk to the LIRR station (it's about a 5-10 minute walk) or take the F train to Union Turnpike, and transfer to the E to Sutphin Boulevard. The LIRR station is right on top of the this stop.

On the LIRR, take the Babylon line from Jamaica out to Freeport. Take the to Jones Beach. Get the schedules from them at 516-228-4000 (option 2).

I've seen different places say the 62 bus and others say the 88. The MTA says 88 but the 62 also serves Freeport.

Check their site here for some details.

You can also take the 87 bus from Hicksville whose trains run frequently from Jamaica.

The only way to do this is LIRR to Freeport N-88 bus to Jones Beach
The disadvantage of going to Wantagh is that the buses run considerably less frequently
The most important thing that you need to know is when the last bus back is.
If you have to take a cab ,your nearest LIRR station is Wantagh which is in the same fare zone as Freeport so you can get the round trip Off Peak ticket at Jamaica LIRR
W/o looking it up Jones Beach to Wantagh LIRR has got to be 5+ miles

Go to Jamaica and take the Babylon LIRR to Wantagh. Once at Wantagh go down the steps and wait in front of Brands Bicycle Shop on the west side of Wantagh Avenue. There's a bus there that will take you to Jones Beach. There's also buses to the beach at Freeport.

Here's the cheapest way to go... If you live by the F train in Queens, then that means that you live near the N4 (somewhat).

Take the F to the last stop, 179th Street in Jamaica--if you don't already live near that stop. Then you'll be on Hillside Avenue and 179th Street. There is a bus stop for the N4. Take that all the way to the last stop, the Freeport Long Island Rail Road station. Then transfer to the N88 and you're on your way to Jones Beach! All in all, this will cost you $4 one-way.

Take the quickest route to either the LIE, Northern state parkway or southern state parkway, head east on any of those until you get to the meadowbrook parkway, take the meadowbrook south- just keep going and going and going and it will eventually run right into Jones Beach, the meadowbrook eventually turns into ocean parkway.

You can get the LIRR at Jamaica Station on Suphtin Blvd. Take the Wantagh line to Freeport Station. The beach is in walking distance of the stop.

Happy tanning!
