I had a '94 Volvo 940 for 13 years, recently got into a wreck and now looking to purchase another car. I am considering either buying another '94 Volvo because I really loved that car and it had over 300K miles on it with very minor issues. I am also looking at the 2001 - 2004 range of S60 but I wanted to know the overall difference. I know volvo quality has gone down since Ford purchased it, and one thing I liked about my Volvo was that it was METAL. None of that fiber glass, or whatever it is stuff. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Based on personal experience, I would not have any Volvo later than the 940 model. The red engine cars are virtually bulletproof. The later models are very expensive to maintain and seem to have quirks built in that just do not appear on earlier Volvos. I had a '98 S90 that was honestly the worst car I ever had. Before that it was a 240 and a 740, neither of which caused me any problems. After the S90 nightmare, I went back to the earlier cars. Lots of peace of mind there and you know what I'm talking about, having owned your 940 for so long.

The newer models are very nice and though the metal isn't quite what it used to be, they are some of the safest vehicles on the roads. Volvo tests all of them at their $75M facility in Sweden (volvocars.com).
I have several friends that own newer Volvos (2004-2007 S40s, S60s, and XC90s) and have not had any problems with them.
Volvos are still built by Volvo in Sweden, and not by Ford. Ford is stamped on parts and such because they own the company, not because they manufactured the parts.

Here is a link to comsumer guide review, that also identifies the build location near the bottom of the page.

Ford dose not have alot of influence on the S60 model, yes there are some parts that are from ford but overall an S60 is more volvo then ford. I have a 2006 S60 2.5t and really enjoy it. The 2.5t or 2.4t(same care slightly different engine size) is the overall best package, Get the sport seats, They are awesome. My previous car was a volvo 740 with 258k on it, good car but i really enjoy the S60 more and I think you would too.

perhaps you should read 2 questions down. in any event
purchasing a decent 940 should be pretty easy just have it checked out before you buy [any decent r.w.d. volvo can be kept alive for at least a generation for alot less than even a new entry level joe lunch bucket sedan] so why buy a new anything? what good is a warrenty when it is not used? if it needs a engine, have one built. if it needs paint. pick a color. these cars have lasted and it seems that the only thing that takes them to the junkyard is abuse and wrecks. p.s. if you want more power or handeling see ipd usa.
good luck i hope you find what you want.

Let me tell you the newer Volvos are made by Ford not Volvo. Look under the hood if you don't believe me. Half the parts have "Ford Motor Company" inscriped on them. Try to buy a 1999 or earlier model to avoid the Ford mess.

I currently own a 1993 940 Turbo and I hope I can keep it forever. I love the turning ratio, much larger in front wheel drive volvo's. I vote for you to find another 940.

Go with another Volvo 940 or anything with B230 engine. This engine is design to last. Newer engine would pump out more horse power, but will not last as long as the B230 engine.

The cable runs from the transmission to the back of the speedometer. Remove it & coat lightly with grease. If it has stopped completely then you will need a new assembly.
