The car seat I have is old (about 8 years). It was my little brothers. I bought my son a new one and do not know what to do with the old one. Can they be recycled?

It is illegal to resale used car seats in my state (MO) and you should only accept a used car seat if you know it's exact history.

Child safety seats should not be recycled. After a few years of use, it is impossible to determine if all components are still as reliable and structurally sound as new. Especially if the car has been in an accident, no matter how minor. So best thing to do, is to throw in out in the trash. You will not be doing anyone a favor by recycling it, or passing it on.

Personally I would not buy a used child seat because I do not know the past history on it. I believe my child's safety is worth spending the extra money on a new seat.

Now saying that I do realize that there are people who cannot afford to purchase a new child seat. In that case I would rather give my seat away for free to help someone in need rather then throw it away.

Ultimately you will have to decide the best route for you.

Actually car seats over 6 years-old are not considered safe. I would just get rid of it. It is not worth the risk of a child getting hurt.

I donated my car seats to a battered womens shelter. I'm not sure the requirements on the age that they will accept. But, definitely worth a call. :)

Cheers!!

Check with your local police department and see if there is a program in your area that inspects donated child safety seats, and distributes them to people that cannot afford to buy one.

donate it to the good will or something, I'm sure someone could use it,if not they will see that it gets re-cycled,that's the best thing to do with it.good luck on it.

Dispose of it - don't sell it or give it to someone. I would break it so it cannot be used.

give it to Good Will, they can always use stuff like that and it could be given to someone else who might need it.
