I would have the say the Irish Armed Forces. They're very small and very proffessional like the British. With an army of 10,500, an Air Corps of 30 planes and helicopters and an unknown amount of navy personnel to me but have reformed in 1922 and only take part in UN peacekeeping operations and are ONLY trained to defend Ireland from armed aggression, you can't beat that.

I'd probably have to say the Israeli's are the most prepared because they are continually forced to defend their country and in the last 50 years they have been invaded many more times than any other country. They are highly trained and they are probably the best at defensive warfare. They also have access to some of the best weapons availabe, provided by the U.S.

I must say though that the U.S. would probably be the best overall at defending its homeland out of sheer power, technology and strength. If no country could beat the U.S. military on its own soil then no country would have any chance of defeating the U.S. on it's own soil. Also the U.S. has the great advantage of being in a geographical position where it cannot be threatened by a land attack by any enemy countries. For any nation to get to the U.S. to attack it, it would have to cross an entire ocean or traverse an entire continent or perhaps even both. All the while they would be pounded by not only the U.S. air force but probably the combined air forces of the U.N.

I would have to agree with other answerers, The Swiss. They have an excellent military for their country and can defend it much better due to geography.

By the way the British Army couldn't stop the IRA either. The British Army even said that the IRA where far to well organised and trained to be defeated by force of arms or intelligence gathering.

As an ex-Irish Army veteran with over 21 years and 174 days service (and by the way the correct term is the Irish Defense Forces) we have never been under attack by another foreign power, our main work in Ireland was "Aid to the Civil Power" which provides back up to the Police against terrorist threat & Border Security. We also maintain an armed guard on the prisons where convicted terrorists are in jail.

Only one Irish soldier has died in armed confrontation in Ireland he was shot by IRA members who were involved in the Don Tidy kidnapping, killed in the same burst of gunfire was a trainee policeman.
We also guarded TV Transmiters & Radio Stations, Hydro-Electric Stations, and provided escort for Bank Cash Deliverys.

As you correctly stated we mainly work with the UN as we are not part of NATO.

In my honest opinion one of the best Armys (for its size) in the world has to be the Israeli's Defence Forces.

I would have to say America just because of the sheer size and force of are military. But look at Isreal they are almost always under threat of attack and there people step up to the plate day in after day. I mean they are surrounded by countries that for years goal has been the destruction of the Isreali state, plus the Palestinian extremeist groups dont make life much easier. For a small country they are god damn ballsy, that I will say.

I would have to disagree. Studies have proved that Americans own more guns than any country in the world. Poles have been conducted, and seminars, that the "American People" are more of a force than the Military. The right to bear arms is our right and we do, that scares the hell out of countries that would even think of invading the USA. We, the citizens of this country are more to be feared than our military, which is the most powerful on this planet.

Actually you could easily beat that. A force that small would be destroyed in short order in today's age of modern warfare.

To answer your question it would probably be a toss up between Japan and the various nations that make up the EU. Both of them have policies of defense dominance which makes an attack on their homeland very difficult. Neither of these political units have the military capability to wage a war beyond their own boundaries though.

They could not stop The IRA from being in the heart of their country for forty years and crossing the border and bombing innocent British children and parents. Every day the IRA left southern Ireland and bombed the innocent British children. Where was the Irish army then? Hopeless. Could not even find one of the IRA murder gangs despite being right next to them.

The US Military is the best equipped, best trained force on earth, a close second would be Israel's IDF. The IDF is an incredibly well equipped and well trained force made up of men and women who truly believe that it is them who stand in the way of their countries destruction. The Government of Israel is not afraid of world opinion, if they are in any danger the IDF will strike.

Israel... they don't usually bother deploying soldiers overseas for the sake of it like many nations (including my own) do. Nothing wrong with either, mind you, but Israel is pretty much focused solely on their defence and regional operations.

I'd consider Australia a good candidate too, and not because I'm in it. With massive bushland and a relatively small population, the military has developed into a very mobile force.

If Mexico raised it incredibly is military up and attacked the U. S. the border patrol would the two be ineffective, or working away. national take care of is there to circumvent that, Border patrol is in basic terms the actual embodiment of our Immigration rules. So no.
