"Religion has always had one very useful role: it keeps the poor from rising up and killing the rich."
- Napoleon Bonaparte
Further, religion encourages rendering unto God while storing up treasures in heaven. What a brilliant scam -- doling out the rewards posthumously, when the hopeful recipients can neither complain, sue, nor revolt.
"Learn to be grateful for the meager crumbs which the good Lord bestows upon you." BAH! Wise up, people!!

Yeah - there are at least two ways of seeing Poverty in a positive light through the eyes of Xianity.
1. ThePoorBastards know that "Indeed it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" because they've been CognitivelyTrained that the "meek and the mild shall inherit the" I'm not sure if it was TheEarth or TheKingdomOfGod - in any case they're gonna get lotsa stuff.
On the other hand
2. TheScammers know this is CompleteKrap cos they in fact know there are no InvisibleSkyPixies and being rich in THIS life is all that matters and the only way to do this is to bleed ThePoor which they do quite successfully by telling ThePoor that the InvisbleSkyPixie is fond of saying and meaning things like: If y'all don't SUCK up to me in a big way I'll send your SorryAsses to hell where you'll burn and scream for all eternity.
If I was starting off a new place I'd invent Xianity to control the plebes.
Notice how it really works in US - they'll even allow themselves to be sucked in to invading a place that never did it any harm just so there ChickenHawk leaders can make Buku dollars from Oil and Construction. It's taken at least five years for many of them to wake up but there are many that haven't.

I think religion makes poverty less palatable. Without religion poor people used to gather in groups with their own income level or culture. With religion, they have a new set of people to compare themselves with and that can't be good for their self esteem.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Some people do find comfort in their delusions, but the reality is that Religion contributes to poverty. Look at the caste system in India or the poverty rates of Buddhist countries.

Poverty is created from socio-political frameworks. A capitalist society will create poverty whilst a communist society stifles innovation - and both are subject to greed and corruption. The central tenet to christianity is the commandment to love god above all else and love your neighbour as yourself. I suppose that means be a decent human being. If political systems create poverty then instead of believing that the poor are to blame for their situation, we should change our society to be inclusive not exclusive.

Pure religion: Grace is sufficient: has no poverty.
Only impure religion (law) gives place to poverty;
And helps create it by fleecing the dumb-sheep.
Love of monetary riches can be spiritual poverty.
Gandhi: poverty is the greatest form of violence.
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

Poverty will always be a sign of injustice. Injustice is very hard on faith and hope and love. Things that are of immense value.
However Christianity gives all believers the faith and hope and love that they need.
If all people really followed Jesus' commandment in Matthew 22 to "love your neighbor as yourself" then there would be no injustice or poverty.
With love in Christ.
