I'm emigrating to Perth in January, and am undecided over whether or not to take my car with me. Used cars in Oz are much more expensive than here, but I know I'll have to pay import duty if I do take mine with me. Has anyone here exported their car to Oz? How much did it cost? How long did it take?

if you want to bring a car into australia - then choose a limited edition classic/rare/vintage car that is worth a lot of $$$ - popular american cars were the mustang, trans am, don't know what a comparable brit car would be - perhaps a James Bond classic/jag/rolls royce/mg???
it costs a fortune to make it comply with australian standards - looking at $10,000 - $20,000 plus - even the tyres may not comply with aust. standards!!!
much better off to just sell everything when moving to australia & buy new.

Why? Your car may or may not comply with Australian design rules. Just because it may have steering on the right will not make it comply. All this depends on the precise model and this is beyond the scope of anyone without detailed knowledge of these things. If it does not comply you may be allowed to drive it but selling it here may be difficult.

I know someone with a recent model Mercedes-Benz left here by a bankrupted businessman. Apart from being left hand drive, it is a German model and would cost so much to bring it into line with Australian specifications that it is just not worth it. It has been on his hands for at least five years and is in very good condition. But nobody wants it because it cannot be driven on the roads except by the original owner.

In another case a man bought a Nissan here. While it looked like the Australian version he soon found that it had been originally sold in Fiji and almost all the body parts from the windscreen back were slightly different. That was like 20 years ago before things were tightened up a bit.

Your car is likely to be an orphan in Australia and most of the dealers will not want anything to do with it.

You can buy very good, three year old used cars, quality brands like Toyotas for $15,000 or a little less.
