I would suggest joining the Army and then taking the path for special forces. There are more slots in special forces than there are in the SEAL teams. Also if you do not quite make it in the Army you can be a Ranger or another type of elite combat unit. In the Navy as far as direct combat it is the SEAL's or nothing as I understand it. Perhaps a Navy man can correct me if I am wrong.

Ahhh... every high school student intent on the military dreams of the special forces. Personally, I wanted to go straight into the crack 4th Battalion, Australia's Commandos.
While quite a few militaries have some sort of direct-entry scheme for the special forces, it's usually better to start off in a regular line infantry unit and get experience in the military lifestyle first. Washout rates for the special forces is high enough. What's the best applicant, a fresh-out-of-highschool kid with big dreams and bigger muscles, or an experienced soldier who's gone through the mental rigors of training over a period of years?
That being said, probably the Army Special Forces. A lot of the stuff they do is more covert, blending into enemy populations and learning about how all sides do things. Outside the SF, the Army has more warrior-type roles to get stuck into.

First, you would need to become a very successful member of the branch of the service that the special operations unit was a part. Then you might be able to qualify to enter the selection process. For some of these units, the attrition rate during the initial selection process might be 3 out of 4 people who had already been screened to enter the program. It can take years to become a member of one of these units.
By the way, don't forget about Marine Recon as an option. Semper Fi

I am prior ARMY and live, breath ARMY. But to give you an honest answer. Hmmmm I guess the Seals are a better choice if your willing to be beat up daily, drowned daily, abused daily. and at the end you will be more of a man then any of the wanabe's could be. Either choice you make just set your mind towards your goal and let nothing stop you. condition your mind to accept that for the next year your going to live HELL ON EARTH. the end result is well worth it.

If you are in peak physical condition, then go for Seals. Just don't get too upset when you spend all your time on the FOB.
If you actually want to fight, have an ounce of intelligence, and are in good shape, go SF, but don't do the 18x program. I see guys every day who are dropped from the program because they are emotionally, mentally, or physically immature. Even if you don't think the first two don't apply to you, the third one does. Rather than risk a permanent injury just trying out, join up and serve in the "big army" for a four year enlistment before you try out.

Focus on a job that you would like and you can fall back on. I know for the Seals you can be from any job and apply. You make it sound like it is job interview, it's not that easy. I had a co-worker who was former Army, ex-Airborne. He was in his mid 20s, best shape of his life and still could not get in SOF.
