Do employers who would refuse to employ somone on the basis of

Interest in ROCK (metal, nu-metal, emo etc),/PSY Trance(rave) music with the coloured radical haircut/tattoos etc to go with it.

Maybe they are into swinging, an ex pole dancer or porn star.

Deserve their company to go bankrupt or clients reject them as not basing their choice of employee on the base of:

Brains.

Skill

Qualification

Experience.

Talent

Passion for the job

Niceness

etc

Logical thinking

Rationality

Crerativity

Problem solveing..

Being prepared with back ups so can deal with things when they go wrong

Having the right equipment to do the job

Ie what I deam professional

But instead on image. Oh and a pole dancer could get staff fit with morning work outs and a porn star should be good with cameras. Not to mention an ex lap dancer should be unbelievably effective at selling to blokes

Out of the box people got us

LANDING ON THE MOON

INVENTED THE AEROPLANE

DISCOVERED AMERICA

INVENTED MANY OF THE INVENTIONS WE TAKE FOR GRANTED.

And when you let the pink haired girl go how do you think her attiude to others will be affected say if she worked harder then all her class mates, gave up a lot, is heavily in debt, may never get a home of her own, was the one who didn't drink heavily, did not do drugs.

Did not bully

Behaved in school.

Maybe sold something very precious to get herself through uni.

Only to be rejected for superficial reasons, when she herself would not reject or ruin your life as you did not have red hair.

HATE? ANGER? AGGRESSION? sounds justified

*** I will not fit in to a team

actually that depends on the team. I operate on the notion that teams are people with different skills that help each other out for a common goal. Much like in movies like'Armagedon', 'The Dirty Dozen', The Abyss' etc.Where everyone looks different but they are like a family.

SO WRONG HENCE ANGER

I like to ignore rules

ACTUALLY QUITE INTELLIGENT SO ATTIUDE TO RULES IS THEY SHOULD ONLY BE FOLLOWED IF THE SPIRT OF THE RULE IS GOOD THEN FOLLOW THE SPIRIT NOT THE LETTER.

IE ON A BUILDING SITE RULES ARE FOR SAFETY & WOULD ACTUALLY WANT VERY STRICT SAFETY RULES & STRICT BOSS AS HIS JOB IS TO KEEP US ALL SAFE & ID EMPLOY SOMONE LIKE THAT ONLY IF THEY COULD DO THAT.

HOWEVER RULES LIKE YOU MUST NOT USE YOUR PHONE ON A PROMO JOB IF A JOB COMES IN OR TO CORDINATE YOURSELF WITH OTHER EMPLOYEES.

Or rules against trainers (which you can move safer & faster) or not wearing combats which having more pockets are dumb

SO I LIKE TO FOLLOW GOOD RULES BUT IGNORE DUMB, IMPRACTICAL OR DANGEROUS AND UNJUST ONES.

THIS REQUIRES MORE BRAINS

ACTUALLY I WOULD DO THIS BUT ONLY FROM PEOPLE CLEARLY SMART WHO ARE NOT INTO EGOS, ORDER OR FOLLOWING RULES WITHOUT THINKING.

Very much I would want to apprentice myself to somone good and passionate about their job that I looked up to.

Say those who developed specail effects for films like transformers, jurassic park, Who do amazing fireworks and light shows etc.

Or how to make stuff out of wood, make nice food etc.

i very much want to learn... but have no respect for ego led twats who like to bully and orger people around to feel big.

THERE IS A VERY VERY CLEAR CUT CULTURE WHERE AS YOU GET OLDER AND MORE EXPERIENCED YOUR JOB IS TO LOOK AFTER THE YOUNG AND ROOKIES.

I HAVE DONE FIRST AID ON PEOPLE, POSSIBLY HELPED SAVE LIAVES INCLUDING PUTTING MY SELF AT RISK TO HELP OTHERS.

I TIRELESSLY CAMPAIGN HERE IN THE TEEN SECTION TO HELP TEENS NOT GET PREGNANT OR HELP THEM HEN THEY DO. AND FIGHTING RELGIOUS ABUSE SUCH AS HONOUR KILLINGS ETC.

AND BEING THIS REBLE I SUPPORTED THE LIKES OF THE ANTI NAZI LEGUE, SOCIALIST, UNIONS, AND OTHERS, AND EVEN THOSE WHO WOULD NOT GET HELP SUCH AS INVESTIGATING THE STANDSTEAD HYCAKC AND FINDING OUT.

THAT THE HYJACKERS NEVER HAD ANY INTENTION OF HURTING OTHERS.

THEY WERE MEERLY FLEEING THE TALIBAN WHO HAD GIRLS MURDERED FOR WALKING IN THE STREET OR GETTING AN EDUCATION.

And the plain was fuill of those they were trying too help escape like friends or family so none left behind.

They probably saved 200 people at the risk of being shot

i don't think they have the right to go bankrupt they have the right to portray a certain image. I was a manager for a company that dealt with high end clients. They would not give us business if someone we had on staff had strange hair or tattoos. We had a policy that no unusually hair color no facial piercing and no visible tattoos. So if you had a tattoo you had to have it covered. We had a girl who new the policy and came in with pink hair and we had to let her go. We have to portray a certain professional image and pink hair does not do it

you keep forgetting that the companies have clients who pay the bills. the company has to present an image that is acceptable to the bill-payer. if you were in a job where you had no interaction with clients or clients didn't come visit, then there should be more flexibility with looks. But if client is offended (save the lecture this is reality) and doesn't do business because of your tattoos (or whatever), then the company doesn't exist and you don't have a job. Regarding music etc., again you are not the only person there. I find certain music offensive and could not work in an environment where I was subjected to it. So again, in order to have a degree of harmony in the office, the employer has to find a neutral balance where all employees can co-exist. If you cannot possible fit into any kind of conformity be self employed and do ya own thing.

I know you want to hear that the employer was wrong- but honestly it was not. You have to look at where you will be working and what kind of image they want to convey. Will their clients have confidence in someone they view as "out of the box ?" If your individual look causes a company to lose business they have every right to turn you away. While discrimination on any level seems wrong, only a few category of people are protected from discrimination- usually because they have traits they have no power over (i.e. disability, gender, race). It's a bummer, but it's true and now that you are in the workplace market, you have to play by their games. No matter how proud of your job as a pole dancer, unless that skill is needed in the position your are applying for, it is OK to leave it off your resume.
My advice to you would be instead of trying to force a company to accept you- find a company that you fit well into. After all, if they do not like you automatically based on the way you look, do you really want to work there?

It depends on the job if tattoos piercings hair would offend customers then no you should not get the job for example many people would not want a undertaker with a bright pink Mohawk a spiders web on his neck and more metal in his face then his car burying there dear old nan.
But in jobs like call centres there should be no problem with whatever you look like shops. I think you should cover any tattoos that may be offencive but on the whole these days company's dont discriminate people.
I think alot of people use all this as an excuse I was a manager of a popular high street jewellers while having red hair eye brow pierced tongue pierced ears pierced many times and tattoos i got that job because i was the best person for it. But you have to think of customers if a customer did not like my appearance i would give them the option of someone else serving them as it is the customers who pay the wages.

The word petulant springs to mind. The image of you angrily stamping your foot because you were not given the toy you wanted is vivid.

I run a small business and would not employ you on the evidence you have provided in the question. This is not discrimination - just plain common sense. Our team works together to achieve a common goal and it works very well. Harmony is the key and we are all pretty happy.

You have made a mistake. You will have to grow up and learn to accept that this happens. Move on and don't make the same mistake again.

What mistake? You have gone to a prospective employer and said -

I will not fit in to a team

I like to ignore rules

I will probably not learn from anyone else's experience

I will not care about other employees or customers

My first priority is myself and everyone else will have to change to accommodate my tantrums.

You have obviously applied to the wrong type of company. There are companies which require your skills but it is up to you to seek them out. Dont blame the companies that you have applied to for not being the right ones - do your homework!

Depends on the business type and position they are trying to fill.

If your working in a lab or research and generally out of the public purview and don't play your music at work then heck you should get the job.

If your being considered for a position which requires a high degree of customer contact such as one with a bank, advertising agency, direct sales position, etc., then the company has a right and obligation to insure that the image you project reflects the image they have established and want to maintain as a corporation.

If Employees are going to interact with customers employers are going to be sensitive to how their employees look and act. If they look like a pirate then the employers are going to hesitate having them wait on tables in a family restaurant or be a bank teller. While it is important to have the intelligence, creativity etc there is a need for an employer to attract and satisy customers and make a profit. If talented people dress or groom to an extreme then you have to understand that you may be limiting your choices. I think people and employers are becoming more tolerant but the reality is that people and employers still tend to initially judge people a lot on how they look.

You don't have to agree with it or like it - but you do have to deal with it because that is the reality today.

Nice rant, albeit a tad lengthy. Employees are the face a company offers to its customers; this they have the right to choose how those employees will present. Some companies have uniform rules, other won't let you wear more than two earrings, etc. That's life.

Sorry, I tend to side with the boss on this. Your dress code/appearance is ok if you work in a call centre etc. For face to face contact with the customer I prefer to meet someone suited and booted. Hey pole dancer is a great career and you earn lots of money. Takes a lot of guts to perform in front of pervs. Wish you well in whatever career you choose, maybe just saying you worked in a bar would help ;) regards
