.308 or .300 Winchester Magnum if you're talking about ranges up 800 yards, it can vary depending on the accuracy of the rifle and ammunition.
If you're talking about shooting something a mile away, .50 BMG is what's mainly used.
If you want something in between, .338 Lapua Magnum should do the trick.
But for the average hunter, sticking with a caliber around .308 is great for long range shooting.

Kinda depends on what you'll be shooting, as well as at what range. Most varmint rifles are long-range rifles, but then again they're varmint rifles, mostly a .22 caliber bullet in front of a large powder charge. They're not appropriate for big game at long-range. As mentioned, the .50 BMG is "big daddy", just ask an Iraqi insurgent. For deer size game, most any of the magnums in the 7mm and .30 cal size range are good. The .270 Winchester is not a magnum, but it has good range and shoots very flat.

Really long range is the 50 or 40 cal; and the weapons packages cost. For an average Joe look at the 308, 30-06 or 8mm Mauser; all three are in use as we speak in various parts of the world as very deadly and effective sniping calibers. That being the case it would stand to reason they must be pretty good for long range shooting.

how long range do you want to shoot?? a mile? 500 yards? the big long range dog is the .50 cal. then the 308 cal. and the 300 mag. these three calibers make up the majority of most military sniper rifles. i personally prefer my 7mm mag. or my .308.

For all practical purposes you can't beat a .308. I like that caliber so much I have 5 of them.

50 Caliber BMG.
If you live in the Soviet Socialist State of California, it would be the 416 Barrett.

That depends to a degree on what you consider long range, and to an even greater degree on what you're shooting at. Depending on your requirements, that might be 6.5/284 or 45-90!
