If not, then does a browning 9 millimeter come with one? I'm writing a story. For future references, how would I found out things like this...if other guns come with a silencer?

I meant if this particular gun can be supressed.

Why is it illegal for civilians to have supressors?

A Browning 9mm is a common pistol that is modified for a supressor. You have to change the barrel to one that is longer and threaded on the muzzle end, then screw the supressor device onto it.

Theoretically, you can supress any gun with a device, but it's not as easy as the unimformed think it is.

It is NOT ILLEGAL to own or use a supressor. It's only illegal to have one without the proper license for it. There is a difference between those two situations.

If defense is the purpose of the handgun, then don't make the volume be a deciding factor. Choose a gun based on it's merits in terms of self defense. If you are in a situation where deadly force is warranted, any potential long term hearing damage is the least of your worries. In fact, because of the adrenaline, you might not even hear the shot. The body has a funny way of protecting it's self in situations like that. Certainly, wear hearing protection while practicing though. As for suppressors, they will be big and bulky, which makes concealed carry difficult, and drawing from concealed carry might be found to be almost impossible. Depending on local laws, they might not be legal to carry concealed as well, although in Texas, that would surprise me.

No one that I know of manufactures a Browning 9mm pistol and includes a silencer with it. The Browning HP suppresses very well, I designed and made a silencer for my HP using an ATF form 1. In the USA, there are no federal laws banning silencers ( a legal term, they are better called suppressors). Those that say silencers are illegal in the USA are idiots. Civilians in 35 states are allowed to own silencers without any permit or license. All that is needed to own one is to have an approved ATF form 4 to buy from a class 3 dealer, or an ATF form 1 to make one. In each case you need to live in a state that allows them, get the local sheriff to sign the tax form (1 or 4), and pay the one time $200 tax. The BATFE routinely approves these tax forms as long as they are properly filled out. I have never heard of the BATFE disapproving one that was filled out correctly.

You can buy silencers from many different dealers in the USA, check out www.subguns.com for a lists of recommended dealers in your state. I have listed a few class 2 FFL/SOT’s below who make firearms with integral suppressors. Any firearm can have muzzle blast reduced by a good suppressor. Revolvers are not well suited for suppression though due to the gap between the cylinder and the barrel, except for some Mosin Nagant revolvers that close this gap upon firing. Blow back operated pistols have so much ejection port noise that no one hardly bothers to use silencers on them except for the little 22 caliber rim fire pistols/rifles. Recoil operated pistols and rifles (Browning 9mm, AR15) also have action noise and popping sounds from the ejection port that suppressors do not tame. The best firearms to suppress are bolt action and single shot pistols and rifles. Supersonic ammo makes a sonic boom that sounds like a whip crack. Using subsonic ammo eliminates the cracking sound and due to the smaller powder charge, they are not as noisy when suppressed also. Even high powered rifles can have the noise level reduced by 100 to 1000 times (20-30 decibels) when equipped with a good silencer.

No they do not. You must get approval from the BATF. Contrary to what a previous poster stated it is a one time fee of $200.00. Once you are approved and pay the fee you never have to pay it again. It usually takes about 3 or 4 months to go through the process. You have to be fingerprinted, and have your local chief law enforcement officer sign off on the form. Then you send the completed form in and wait until approval. When approved you can pick up your Class 3 item form a licensed Class 3 dealer.

I think your questions been answered.
They are out there to be had,
But there's a 200dollar tax and like someone else said,
"government hoops to be jumped through."
(i.e. the gov. KNOWS who owns LEGAL supressors.)
here's my input.
Silencers aren't silent.
They don't silence, they supress noise.
A silenced Ruger .22pistol, A favorite covert weapon, makes a noise like a loud hand clap with each shot.
A hand clap, however doesn't sound like a gun shot,
So they noise isn't likely to be recognised as a gunshot.

CHECK OUT REAL SILENCER/ SUPRESSORS AT WWW.AUTOWEAPONS.COM! I think they even have videos of silenced weapons!

It's only illegal for civilians to have a suppressor if they do not have the correct license and paperwork from the BATF as stated above. The reason being so that someone can't just go around a neighborhood shooting people without someone knowing about it. If you are looking for a gun that comes suppressor ready as in the barrel is pre-threaded for one look at the HK Mk-23. It's the .45 caliber handgun in use by our special forces.

No...Guns are not sold with silencers/suppressers to the general public. They can in fact be purchased but the buyer must go thru an extensive background check thru BATF (Bureau of Alcohol,Tobacco & Firearms...The Firearms regulatory branch of the Justice Department, and each applicant must be fingerprinted, provide valid proof of age . residence and United States citizenship, the local state law enforcement agency for the state of residence also does their own independant investigation of the applicant.. Once approved the silencer can be used under tight regulations for only legitimate and legal purposes. There ii a one time $200 tax stamp that must be purchased at the time of transfer.
For the most part silencers and suppressors are used by law enforcement and the military in situations where loud gunfire would result in additional injuries or panic, example: Hostage situations or crowded public areas.
The Browning 9mm Hi Power is one of the more popular guns to mount a silencer on.. OAS British Commando's during WWII used them against the Germans in clandestine operations in Europe. These guns used 9mm subsonic ammunition to even reduce the noise further. Most any semi-automatic pistol and some rifles can be silenced /suppressed
In this manner. I would think that there are hundreds of sources on this subject that you can access thru on-line web browsers..Just type in Firearms Silencer/Suppressors. Good Luck!

A pistol can be equipped with a suppressor, but you need to jump through a lot of government hoops...and pay additional for the privilege.
The only revolver I know of that can be suppressed is the
Mosin-Nagant revolver made in Russia.

No they don't come with one but you can purchase one. So if you want your gun in your book to have a silencer than it would be very plausible. Good job on trying to tie up the loopholes in your story to make it more believable.
