My dog has been excessively licking his paws, it is very annoying to me and so I know it has to be annoying to him too. I bought that bitter tasting spray, but it only helps until it dries up and I've bought all kinds of anti-itch sprays, but nothing seems to be working! It started a couple of summers ago, I've taken him to the vet and she said that he has allergies and that there wasn't much that she could do for him. She recommended me to a veterinary dermatoligist, however I've never taken him because it would cost me an arm and a leg. Is anyone else having this problem? I've been searching on the internet for some remedies to help him, I've read about a product called Be Well and also some tablets on allergicpet.com. Has anyone used either of these products on their dogs? Does it help? If not, what are you doing to help your dog? Please help!!

Hey,
My dog does this too. I have tried the sprays but he likes them. He is four years old. He has stopped doing it so much now, i think he did it because of boredum. Before you try using tablets, try telling him off everytime he licks/bites his paws and put a sock on them and wrap it with duck tape (this worked for me) Try buying your dog some new toys or chews so he can be distracted biting them instead, if you dont take him for walks or in the car often try taking him atleast once a day, this will stop him being bored. Good luck!

My dog started to do this, too. I have a mini pin that is almost 9 years old and I know it is not a sign of senility. I called my vet because I wanted to make sure that she wasn't licking due to sore paws or lower legs from lyme's disease (she had been exposed in the past). The vet consoled me and told me that it was probably an allergic reaction. They told me that I could give her (she weighs about 12lbs) one tablet of benedryl about twice a day.

It is uaually a psychological issue. Dogs have been put on Prozac for this. It is like an OCD kind of thing. Sometimes behavior modification can help...sometimes increasing the exercise and getting the dog a "job" can help. Seeing a Behaviorist is sometimes necessary.

My dog is doing the same thing except he turns in circles trying to catch his paw. Big dummy. I took him to the vets and they tested for a fungal infection, but it came back negative. They told me to put a pasty mixture of baking soda on his paw. So after I bathe him, I put a healthy coat of conditioner on his paw, rinse and the put the baking soda on his paw. Needless to say, he left it alone for that day, but started back the next day.

Your dog has an allergy.
You have annoyed me by saying "taking the dog ... will cost and arm and a leg". Having or owning a dog is like having children--they do need medical attention. How would you feel if you were itchy and couldn't find any relief?

His excessive licking may not be due to allergies.
He may have a psychological root to it. Some dogs lick excessively to relieve frustration or have issues/anxieties that need to be dealt with.
Try these two things: they won't cost you a dime, just some time:
1) walk him DAILY for an hour. *if you need help with walking tips, visit cesar milan's website . master the walk will help. Walking helps him to release negative energy that is stored up. Dogs, like people, need an outlet for frustration, aggression, anger, etc. excessive licking is an obsessive trait.
2) register for an obedience class, to help you, not him in helping with other problems that may arise.
*also, try taking him to a dog park after your walk, to reward him, and to get him to socialize with other dogs.
do this activity AFTER you have walked him, so that his frustrations will be dealt with, and he doesn't decide to pick a fight with another dog.
good luck!

Although I dont have any other answer than maybe take him in or call a vet. Maybe they can give you an idea without having him come in.....MAYBE. ALso, the answer above me is cute...chasing his own paw? Haahaaa. Dogs are so silly:o)
