I know it will make it sting, but does it help heal or cure it, or just irritate it even more? Any other side effects?

I'm not sure about salt, I can tell you the best way I've ever gotten rid of one, and now use it every time. I don't enforce using peroxide a lot, but in this case it's wonderful. Right before you go to bed (your saliva production decreases at night when you're sleeping), brush your teeth and the area where the sore is. Make sure you rinse the toothpaste away. Pull your lip or cheek or wherever the sore is away from your teeth for a few seconds and let it dry. Take a q-tip, dip it in peroxide, and dab it onto the sore. Keep holding it out for a minute or so to let it work. Go to bed.
I've used this many many times and by morning have only a little area where the sore was, but it doesn't hurt and heals within the day! Good luck!

If you want to prevent their recurrence use Yogurt containing the bacteria lactobacillus acidophilus. Just be sure on the label it says that it has the culture lactobacillus acidophilus. Some commercial yogurts don't and that is the active part of yogurt you need to help prevent canker sores.

If you don't like yogurt you can go to a natural foods store and buy lactobacillus acidophilus capsules that you can include in a daily regime.

If you want to use the yogurt by eating it and you have a bit of an anger management problem (temper) then mix the yogurt with some water and sweetener like honey, agave syrup, maple syrup or sugar. Plain yogurt can increase temper but somehow mixed with water, it doesn't. It is also known as lassi (yogurt and water drink).

My mom suffered with canker sores her whole life and after I told her to get on the lactobacillus, they never came back. I don't think she ever had another one up until the day she died. That was about 15 years worth of canker free mouth! As she passed along this remedy, I also do.

Good luck with those nasty buggers. Kiss them good by with a heaping helping of yogurt or the caps. Actually about a tablespoon or two a day should be enough. You don't have to eat a whole container of it for it to work.

Salt is o.k., but baking soda works better at relieving the pain. I've tried both and neither seems to heal the sore faster. Applying the baking soda makes it sting worse than salt, but after the sting goes away there is pain relief for about 2-4 hours.

go get Kanka from your local store or pharmacy. I had a really bad one after going to the dentist in the back of my gums under my tongue, and the store sells a Kanka brush, that you brush on the med. It helped and was healed within 3 days after dealing with it for over a week w/nothing.

I don't know as it will hurt or help, and it's more pain than necessary. Call your dentist. They have ointments special for cancer sores. It will work, and it will help protect you from the pain it can cause.
may Peace be with you

My husband and kids swear by it. It stings, it helps dry it out. I don't know that it heals faster but you do get some temperary pain relief after the sting is gone.
