Get a nissan sentra or an altima. They are sensible cars, they perform well, are economical and they are reliable as hell. They also retain higher resale value than most american cars in their price range.
You could go for civics or a mazda 6, but people will hate kids who drive cars like that. They will automatically assume you are some kind of wannabe ricer or something.
If price is not an issue, go for a BMW 3 series, they are good, reliable and german. The germans know a thing or two about engineering and mechanical reliability. Also, european cars still look great and maintain their value as they get older. Look around at some 1998 or 1997 BMW or Mercedes, they still look good compared to other cars of the same age. You won't find anything much better for a first car than a 3 series, trust me.

Per an earlier answer...there's no reason to buy anything but an American made vehicle....yeah, yeah, I know, they're all a collection of parts from around the world......but then prove to your dad you're smart enough to understand WHY so many jobs are going off shore...we buy the stuff then complain about no jobs.....but to the point...if the $$ is there go for the little Saturn Sky or its sister the Pontiac.......if ya gotta have a rice burner look at the Subaru WRX...runs like stink and may be made in the USA like the new Outback.......but still it's a 4 door and if you need 4 doors call a taxi...

Wow getting a new car with only a permit? Nice...well depends on how much your dad is willing to spend. Myself, when my lease is up, i'm going to buy the new Mercury Mariner. Lots of great stuff with that SUV...plus, it has a new Hybrid version out now. I love how stylish it looks and for all of the goodies that it comes with (navigation system, leather seats, moonroof, etc., top price I think is about $32,000).
PS-please don't get a Honda Civic...they are one of the top 10 most stolen cars for its parts, and they are just way to common for my taste...every other car I see is a Civic....
