15-20% on tabs.
$1 a drink US, £1 a drink UK (unless in a pub not bar), INR50-100 a drink India.
Alternatively I always liked the customers who tipped first and tipped big with a "can you look after me tonight?". TIPS means To Insure Prompt Service so a $20+ tip at the start of the night can get you served quickly even at the busiest moments. :-)
Don't forget, always be polite to your bartenders/servers too, that goes a looong way to getting good service.

I tip $1 sometimes $2 (if the bartender is good) per drink. I even throw down a buck on a $1.50 PBR. Having served I'll tell you that in the end this will tend to get you served faster. Most bartenders make crap for their hourly wage, the like waitresses depend on the tip. If they know they are going to get something from you each time you order, they will come to you sooner rather than later. If I'm running a tap it all depends on how able I am to do the math at the end of the night. I try to give about 20%+. I tend to bring cash with me when I go out so that I can better keep track of how much I'm spending. It gets real easy to run a large tab.

I usually tip them $1-$2 depending on what I order, if they have to mix a lot of stuff together, or if they are super nice to me.

it depends on how nice he is but 15 % of your tab should do it.
