Good question, Jay R. Notice how no one has answered it yet? (
Of course the answer is, without God no theory of creation makes sense. Some electrons starting a spark, a thin blue gas compressing, energy from a super nova or black hole, a very dense piece of matter, etc. Because "in the beginning" something had to exist without any origin. Something has always been here. Now, if you are an atheist, it was an Almighty Electron that has always been here with no origin.
And if you are a believer, it is God.

First of all, RiotGirl had a great answer. All atheists are not scientists and not all scientists are atheists
Second. Science does not know either, and that is ok. There are hypothesis out there and the hypothesis are being worked on and put through a rigorous scientific method. If you want to know the current hypothesis and testing methods of said hypothesis, go to the library and read a CURRENT science book and journal article
Scientists will say "I do not know, yet" and to continue to look for an answer. We do not fill all unknown with a supernatural power.

Whatever answer I could think of is it would be 100% MORE credible than saying some InvisibleSkyPixie, over a SIX day period, methodicly waved a wand and 'created' all forms of everything we know of in the physical world and then RESTED on the SIXTH day.
I dunno about y'all but I sure wouldn't consider bowing before anything that NEEDED a rest after six days.
I reckon any InvisibleSkyPixie worth his salt coulda knocked up the universe and everything in it in about POINT 006 of a second.
The InvisibleSkyPixie the Theists worship and adore seems much more like something man has created that created man.
Talking of creation - who created InvisibleSkyPixie?
Watch 'em duck and dive using explanations like 'god is outside SpaceTimeLogicReason BUT any OTHER explanation for the existence of the universe and everything in it HAS to comply with SpaceTimeLogicReason explanations'.
Yeah; right. LOL.

There was a very very very dense piece of matter at what is now the center of the universe. Gravity kept pulling that piece of matter tighter and tighter until there was an atomic reaction that caused it push outwards. That matter became the universe.
Our planet thanks to it's nickel core formed an atmosphere. Then the very basic forms of life began to emerge. Most likely through lighting strikes. These were single celled organisms. From there evolution took care of the rest. If you need evolution explained ask another question.

As for the existence of life, pinch yourself; presumably you will conclude that you exist. The exact mechanism for how life began is not known, and may never be; four billion years of erosion, tectonic shifts, and the proliferation of subsequent life have rather thoroughly muddied the waters, but once life began, evolution took over and created the panoply of species that we see today. One may believe that some sort of god tinkered in all of this, but it not necessary to suppose so -- and it is provably useless to so suppose, as such a supposition cannot lead to predictable consequences. Which makes the whole exercise quite pointless.

I am a Christian, but the best two answers I've gotten when I ask this question are: "Chemical reactions" and "The Big Bang".
By all means, those could be true and there STILL could be a God.
By the way, the fact that most people (atheists) here who are more or less trying to impugn your intelligence or criticize you instead of answer your questions entertains me. =]

You really need to go to a proper school. The answers are all there.
God is imaginary as were all the gods that mankind invented before.
Do the research yourself but put aside all notions of a 'wizard in the sky' version. That garbage is all an invention of man seeking power over other men a LONG time ago.
In case you hadn't noticed, we are now in 2007. Most of us have received the kind of education that frees us from the shackles of mythical religion.
God is a fake. It is so clear.

You can start be knowing the definition of atheism. The only reason your asking an atheist is because you really don't want to know the answer. Not all atheists are going to know the origin of the universe. If you want a more accurate answer please ask someone who is far more well educated on this for starters.

Abiogenesis is a new science.
We have much to learn about it but the preliminary findings are very exciting.
Suffice to say that there is nothing to suggest anything other than the Big Bang ever happened.
