Well, it is not as simple as "training your dog".

First, stop asking him to come!!!!!!!!!!! If he is not coming 100% you have taught him that "come" is optional. If he does come, by all means, PRAISE him. NEVER ask a dog to come and then when he does, punish for something he did twenty seconds ago! Also, never ask a dog to come and then do something he doesn't think is fun, like meds, bath, nails clipped, etc.

"come" is a tough one for dog owners as it requires dogs to leave something they are enjoying to come to you, which had better be way more enjoyable. This is where the training part comes in.

You must teach your dog that "come" is a very fun and rewarding thing to do! If he isn't doing this well, you must practice with a leash on so that he learns that this is a command and cannot be ignored! Do not practice off leash until you are certain he will respond correctly. Since there are two of you, this is easy to practice. The two of you can stand any distance apart and practice calling him. If both of you have treats, or something that motivates him. He can just come back and forth between you two. Pratice with no distractions and work up to little distractions.

Good luck, it will take some time and patience! Finding a trainer would help immensely. They can help with timing and other things.

You should get a training leash and some yummy treats. You and your husband go for a walk with your dog. Have him sit. Give him a tiny bit of treat. One of you stay with him. The other, with the leash walk a few feet away. Ask him to "Come." Either kneel down, or bend and do the "come here" hand motion as you say it. When he comes, give him another tiny piece of treat and praise like crazy. Work on that for a couple of minutes. Then let him explore and be a dog, on leash. After a little bit, train for a few more minutes. After a few days, maybe a few weeks, this will become a habit. When you notice that on leash he comes to you every time you call. Then the both of you take him out to an open area. Start out with the leash, have him sit, give him treats and praise. The person that stays there with him, take off the leash. The other, have him come, treat and praise. Do this every day for a little while, a few minutes. Soon enough he will come every single time you ask him to. Good Luck.

You could get him trained professionally,
or carry around treats in your pocket (pieces of dry dog food).

First start calling him in the house, and when he comes praise him strongly and give him a treat. Do this a good few times a day.

When you think he's ready, bring him for a walk, let him off and call him back. If he comes, give him a treat, praise him strongly and let him go again. You let him go again so he knows that when he's called it dosn't always mean going back on the lead, it means a treat! Association with a positive thing!

If he does not come back, keep trying, or go and catch him and don't say anything, dont scold him or anything just put the lead back on him.
You could put a long line on him and try it this way for the next walk. Some thin rope will do. When you want him to come, call him, reel him in while still calling him and praise him strongly and give him a treat when you've got him.

Remember to ALWAYS give him a treat when he comes during this training stage. Even when you are just calling him in out of the yard or something, give him a treat when he comes to you.

You say he is an inside dog....well perhaps he is not walked enough? If this is the case, he will get so excited when he is brought for a walk that of course he will not want to come back to you. Just do what I've said here and it shouldn't take long for him to obey you. Carry on giving the treats for about a two weeks after you think you've nailed it. This will just reinforce it.

Good luck!

Outside is different than inside.. They know inside that if they don't come, that you can easily get to them. Outside is an entirely different story. But he doesn't take you seriously when you call him. You have to have him know he has to come, but you have to be someone a dog would want to come to.. Never reprimanding when you call him and he comes.. No matter what he did.. And it has to be worth his while.. Praise.. Put him on a long line, and tell him to come.. When he doesn't then you pull him to you. When he is there... Good boy !

People think that if they provide a dog a good home, good food, nice crate, good toys etc.. That the dog would be more loyal and more willing to listen to them. Doesn't work that way. Dogs don't see those things like people do. They have no idea that the crate cost you $150.. etc. He knows that you consider him an equal cause you sleep together, but he doesn't know that you expect him to come when you call him. You have to teach him those things you want him to know.

He's never been trained to come when called and he has learned that outside he doesn't have to and you can't/won't make him. A dog should NEVER be given a command that the owner can't/won't enforce when they are being trained.
You need to put this dog on a long line and only let him out on a long line..when you call him and he ignores you reel him in to you..make it fun, use lots of praise. Never get angry and call him in an angry voice, reward him for coming to you no matter how long it takes, never punish him for coming and never call him to you even in the house if he is going to be punished or made to do something he doesn't like, always go to him for these types of things.
Always make coming ot you a positive, happy experience.
I also highly recommend that you enroll in obedience classes.

You should probably find a dog trainer, especially look for one that specializes in older dogs with problems. Depending on how bad your dog is (no offense to the dog) will effect how long the training will take and how much it will be. The thing is, you have to be able to be there during training or the dog won't learn correctly, so take your dog in your free-time and it should all work out in the end.

My neighbor uses a empty food can with a few rocks inside. It's sorta of a weird thing, but when her dog doesn't come to her she will grab that can and start shaking it like crazy and he will come running back to the house as fast as he can. You'll just need to teach him that the sound is coming from you. Maybe call him from room to room or something while playing with the can.

Good Luck!

When you call him, always give him a treat. Inside or out, no matter what. You have to make him come when you say. He probably gets distracted outside and knows if he comes to you, he'll have to go back in. Start practicing in the house, then do it several times outside where you give him a treat for coming to you, but don't take him inside.

Could he be deaf? If now not, you put him on a leash and call him, then pull him to you (gently!). When he will get all the solution to you, praise him & supply him a deal with, despite the fact that you did lots of the work. Maintain doing this almost always. Eventually, he should get the connection, "come here + go to my character = deal with & love. If he is deaf, you need a hand sign or something.

what breed?
i had the exact same problem with my jack russell when he was about a year old. i could never call him back, he was too distracted by the many sights and smells of outside. i always got very angry with him but that only made matters worse.
then, i found the wonderful world of treats. i used to use just his normal dry food but since he had tasted that before, i resorted to a tastier source. you can buy a pack of them at your supermarket. they look like possum poo. oval shaped and small
around the house, i would just go through a door and say come for him to follow so he would associate the word with the action. then i introduced treats and said come for him to come to me. and i gave him a treat everytime. he loved the treats! i decided one day that i would trust him off leash to let him go to the toilet. i told him to come, but he didnt. i could not understand why training was not working but it turned out all to be apart of training. he wasnt going to immediately learn from ONE session outside. he needed more experience. so i did this same stuff, showing i was dominant by doing things like making him sit before leaving the house, eating his food and putting on his leash. he did not like it at first but got used to it in a few days/weeks.

ONE IMPORTANT FACTOR THAT MADE TRAINING A SUCCESS WITH MY DOG WAS THAT I GOT HIM DESEXED. HE CONCENTRATED A LOT BETTER AFTER THAT! GET IT DONE! IT WORKS WONDERS

now, at 1yr and 4 months he comes to me everytime i call him, even when playing with other dogs, which i am still quite surprised he does! he used to be a disobedient dog but now he is my little sweetheart. once you get training under you belt, you are always happy with your dog and in return your dog is always happy with you!

thanks, i wish u luck!
i still cant believe i successfully trained my jack russell who are known to think for themselves
