PDF stands for Portable Document File. Actually all it is, is a "picture" of a printed document. It is a product of Adobe Systems and uses post script drivers to create a very high quality image of a printed document.
The PDF format was created several years ago by Adobe and began as a marketing ploy. The thought being that if they gave away the PDF reader for free more people would buy the "PDF writer" program which is used to create the PDF files. The ploy worked as now PDF has become a standard for sharing documents.
With the high cost of paper and ink these days, along with the added size and weight, software manufacturers have all but stopped supplying printed user's manuals with their software products. It is far cheaper for them to put the user's guide on a disk in PDF format than it would be to include a 500 page printed manual with their product. They can also put copies in their website to download.
The uses are endless, If the document is printable it is capable of being converted to PDF format.
Hope this helps,
Captain Computer
