I've picked up a stray kitten last night. I heard her mewing and she basically followed me. Because it was late at night and she was so small, I figured she'd probably been abandoned. She won't even eat solid food yet, only milk. Plus, she looked scared and was basically begging passer-bys with continuous mewing.
So I took her in.
The only problem is it's been about 10 hours now, and I don't know where she goes yet (I'm sure she must have left a gift or two somewhere by now). I wasn't prepared for this, so right now, I've filled a shoebox with potting soil. I'm going to go get some real litter in a couple of hours. Anyway, I've shown her the shoebox, but it hasn't been used yet and I don't think she gets it.
So what's the quickest way to get a kitten to understand the concept of litter box?

First, THANK YOU for caring. Get some Gerber stage 2 CHICKEN baby food and the kitten milk, KMR. Also dry kitten food, which you can soak, and a little canned food, which she can have a teaspoon of 2-3 times a day.
Also a bag of regular litter, not clumping. Don't use pellets because if you end up finding her another home, she may not use regular litter.
Mix baby food with a little KMR and she'll eat.
Remember- she's stressed, and she's just a baby.
You can try gently rubbing her hieny with a warm wet piece of cotton, and see if that helps.
Make sure she can get into litter box okay.
Here's a great trick: Put her in litter box. Gently take one of her little front paws, and "Dig" with it...just a few times.
It triggers instinct. Then leave her alone let her leave the box herself, and watch her to make sure you don't miss her first pee.
THEN- and this is important- watch her carefully, and when she is nosing around like she needs potty, Put Her In the Box and leave her. (If she doesn't go right away you can do the gentle dig again once .) Make sure she uses the box, and you shouldn't have a problem again. It's just that first time.
Another GOOD IDEA is to put a little litterbox in every room so that her tiny bladder always gets relieved in a box. It's only temporary, and it's better to make it easy for the kitten to do what you want. If she starts soiling elsewhere, she will do it again. This routine has never failed me. Best of Luck.

The very first time you bring home your kitten home I would take it to the litter box. Get down in the floor with the kitten and place the kitten in the litter box. Start scratching around in the litter box yourself so the kitten can see you. Try to get a hold of one of the kitten's paws and try to get the kitten to scratch in the litter also. Once you place the litter box where you want it do not move it. You will have to show the kitten frequently where the litter box is at. I have my litter box in the same room where I feed my cat. I have never tried to leash train my cat. I was always worried that my cat would get away. There are harness that you can buy. I still would be concerned. I would not train your kitten to leash walk. It will be way to young to do so now. Make sure you do not get the kitten to young. I would buy a scratching post. Until you have the kitten declawed it will scratch at everything. The post will help. Buy toys so it can play. They are really fun to watch You can get kittens at the Humane Society where ever you live. I am sure they have a lot. As soon as you get your kitten be sure and take it to the VEt. so it can have a good check up. The Vet. will give the necessary shots it will need. You will be a great mom. You are doing the right thing by reading about kittens as much as you can. That way you will know what to expect. You will do just fine. I would worry though about that leash thing. I would worry about other dogs being around. The cat getting away and you couldn't get it back. Good Luck

I've had several cats & kittens in my lifetime and I'v seen the mother use the litter box and her kittens learn from her. If no mother present I have simply repeatedly put the kitten in the litter box and soon she gets the picture. You may want to take a trip to the pet store or Wall Mart & get a low litter pan, one that isn't too high. Stay with her & when she tries to get out just put her back in a few times. Confine her to a small area containing the litter box, food, and water, and maybe a soft towel to sleep on. When you see her using the box you can expand her area of freedom. I hope this works for you too.

Every time you get up in the moring put your cat in her litter tray. Do the same when you go to bed. And when they have had meals put them straight the litter tray. When you see them pooing on the floor gently pick them up and place them in the litter tray. The best one to look out for is if they go in the corner and they raise there bum then they are having a poo. And just put them in the litter tray. Also make sure you clean really good where they have a poo.. I did all this with my 3 month old kitten and she was litter trained in like a month good look.

As soon as you find out where your kitten is going to the bathroom, catch it in the act and scold it.Put some tuna, which cats find irresistible in the litter box and reward it for using the litter box.

it is a hard thing to do. what you need to do is get something to cover the hole in the toilet and fill it with kitty litter. then the cat goes to the bathroom on the toilet in the kitty litter. after a while, the cat gets used to doing his business on the toilet and you take away the kitty litter and they just go in the toilet

well what mother cats do (she is too young to have learned) is lick there bottom. i don't know why but they do and that's how they learn. try wiping her bottom with a warm not hot paper towl or cloth. if that doesn't work, every time you see heruse the bathroom in the floor, tell her "bad cat" and soon she will learn. hope i helped!

please get her vet checked, she sounds very young. kitty litter is fine, just keep popping her in when she has eaten or drunk some milk. she will soon get used to it. gradually move the litter box closer to the door, she will learn to go outside in a couple of weeks.

I've seen in magazines and on TV.
There is a device they put on the seat and the cat does its business in the toilet.
