Romania hasn't been a Military power since Vlad Tepes. The country has the bad luck to be constantly surrounded by neighbors that have a economic and military might that puts them too shame. This is NOT intended as an insult to the Romanian people. The country has been constantly invaded, and conquered from the time of the Goths. The Turks, Russia, German, Just about every major power that was ever in Europe has at on time or another marched an army through Romania. They haven't had a chance to put it back together yet.

Maybe now with the fall of of The USSR and the introduction of a slow and steady conversion to a Free Market Democratic system they can climb out of the hold that they have been in for the past 200 years or so.

Personally I wish them all the best.

After the 1989 Revolution when the Romanians managed to free themselves from the Dictator Ceausescu and communism, they still had a very formidable Army, Navy and Air force. alongside this was the was the Police & Jandamaria, even the Firebrigade toted AKs up until the end of 2006 it being part of the military.
Military Conscription also ended in 2006 the military now is being redesigned along NATO lines.

Back during the Communist time Romanian Military (Infantry and Airforce) served in Africa. I believe the only time (if ever) there was any nuclear weapons on Romanian territory they would have been under Soviet control.

Presently Romania is serving in Iraq and Ahfaganistan, with Police Units in KOSOVO.
