VERY UNSAFE VEHICLES TO DRIVE, THERE IS VIRTUALLY ZERO PROTECTION.

Hi, the biggest problem with the VW Bug model would be a front end collision. The early 60's models had a real problem........the steering wheel would be "telescopic" in a front end collison. Lots of ppl died or got seriously hurt because the steering wheel, or the length of the whole shaft would be pushed into the passenger compartment in a front end collision, resulting in serious injury. I think VW changed this in later year models, they now have collapsable steering columns. Lots of people romance about the old bugs; they may have been economical and reliable cars back in the day. The earlier ones have 6 volt electrical systems, upgraded to 12 volt in 67 i think. I had a 68 model in 1980, it was a nightmare, the brakes sucked, the clutch was spongy, the transmission always broke a connecting rod, and the engine was never smooth. I always had a problem with the #3 cylinder. I bought it for $200 and sold it for $10 about 3 months later. My Dad bought a new VW convertible bug in 1978, it was OK but the drivers seat always gave him back pain, and it was fuel injected, and he always had a problem with it, constantly in the shop for service, in connection with the fuel injection. Fun cars to drive, but not worth the money in the long run, even today. Maintanance is expensive, and the little cars always seem to need it. Good Luck!!

If you drive the way you should, they are great cars. The problem is in finding one in good repair. The engine is over the drive wheels, for superior traction. They don't weigh much and have small engines = economy. They even float.
Go for a '70s model for the power brakes and 12 volt electrics.

As an older car, they don't have all the "safety" features of todays cars. You actually drive a real automobile instead of a bubble wrap safety cage.

No, they're dogs. Have a tendancy to fall over and the brakes are awful. Wasn't too bad in the 60's by comparison with other bad cars, but now you wouldn't think about it except as a collector.

Rear engined so tail happy handling especially in the wet. Solid construction but they do rust if not looked after. Reliable aircooled engine tolerant of alot of abuse. But its not a fuel efficient engine even by the standards of its day.

They are terrible as far as safety. They do not have airbags, they do not have shoulder straps and the brakes are terrible. Collector only, not made to drive in today's traffic or speeds.

I know people who had these cars and they are excellent cars. They are reliable and fuel efficient. The only thing which compares to that are today's Toyota Carollas and Camrys.
