It was fought to protect and advance corporate interests, especially oil companies that wanted to line the Vietnam coast with off-shore wells.

No President wanted to be the one who lost the war:

It was largely fought to save face. We backed the French and used "to stop Communism" as the basis. When the French left, we could either fail against the Communists or pick up where the French left off.

Too bad we did not learn anything from the French.

no......... i see how you would think that only the black people fought that war since we lost. however its more like white AND black people killing and getting killed by yellow people for a government ran by greedy bastards who stole this land from the "red" people, and now that they are across the sea they are no longer british, but since then millions of other imagrants have come to america, so its no longer the land of the brits taking america for the natives.................

No, My two uncles who were both in the infantry and fought in Vietnam. They were white. You show your ignorance by asking that question.
