Try teaching her to spell a few simple words, like cat and dog. Make her sound them out and them you can add words. Don't get discourage with him/her. It will come when it is meant to.

I would suggest the Jolly Phonics strategy as its really child friendly and multi sensory. SATIP are the first letters to learn as they are easy to remember - each letter comes with a action story that helps the child to remember the grapheme (the written letter) and phoneme (sound). There are also activities and the letters can form words straight away. BINGO LINGO is also a great book that teaches letters through rhymes. Remember rhymes are REALLY important because they link learning together. Words and Pictures site on BBC online is also excellent! Use as many senses as you can and teach little and often - sand trays/ water play (you can't beat a bucket of water and a paint brush for drawing letters on concrete as no mess!) - I play letter hopscotch/ hide letters in the sand/ put letters up the stairs on the way to bed etc - all help! Happy learning! Good luck

My son is the same age, and is beginning to read a few small words. I got him two Dr Seuss books - ABC and Hop on Pop. I started with the ABC book, and as we went through it I asked him to identify the letter and what sound it made. Once he learned all the sounds (just the basics, I didn't teach him all of the unusual letter sounds just yet) I got Hop on Pop and started teaching him to sound out the words. That book has a lot of small, simple words so it was easier for him. He's making progress, so I assume it was a good method. Whatever you do, keep it fun. If you push her too hard, she won't enjoy it anymore and won't want to learn anything. Good luck!

Read to her, and allow her to read to you (making up stories based on the illustrations). Those are beginning reading skills.

Start with her name-teach her that when the letters in her name are arranged that way, it reads her name.

There is a book called "Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons". It is intended for young children, and is VERY simple to use. It is probably available at your local book store. The method may not work for some children, or you may have to divide the lessons in half for short attention spans. Just remember to always encourage and never force, or you will make it something she despises.

We homeschool, and use A Beka curriculum. It is a program that many private schools and home schools use. Check out their website and request a free catalog-they have a very good phonics based reading program.

Hooked on Phonics is another good program.

What's the hurry?
Will the time you spend on reading instruction take away from time you two could be spending together on age-appropriate things? (things like building blocks and coloring to work on motor skills). There are always trade-offs.

Better than teaching to read, why don't you teach her to love reading by simply reading to her and letting her play with books.

Go to Toys R Us and buy some flash cards; alphabet letters, numbers, shapes and colors.
My daughter-in-law did this for her three girls and they knew so much more than other kids going into kindergarten.
