What part of new york or boston would you say i should visit to obtain certain information regarding my research, without appearing to intrusive.
Ideally some bars/diners where some of the old neighbourhood folks have settled over the years, not necessarily connected to the family, just knowledgable of that particular era. 50s 60s etc.

If you want accurate information as to the origins of the Mafia, read "Honor Thy Father" by Gay Telese.

Contrary to what another responder said, the Mafia started in Sicily (not France!) during the French occupation of the island. The word Mafia is an acronym meaning, in Sicilian dialect, "Death to the French."

Unless you really know people it's not a good idea to go around asking questions in NY. They aren't going to open up to you and tell you wonderful storys of the good old days. These are people who walk around packing guns and aren't afraid to use them. You can walk around the village and little italy, you can see the restaurants where people were "rubbed' out, those are pretty open to everyone, but it's not a good idea to ask too many comments. I learned a little while living down there, but that was only becuse I lived there and they began to trust me after 8 years.

Did you know the Mafia started in France in the 1600's as a law enforcement organization such as the FBI or CIA?

Definitely do a little research in Little Italy, and Brooklyn.

Just don't poke your nose around too much, or it may get ugly.
