Hi Guys, occasionally i use cheese treats when training my Bullmastiff. Just of late he has had loose pooos on and off, vet says he seems healthy. What are your thoughts on this please? ps: he would only get 6-8 1/4 inch squares in any one day and not every day. We feed him on Hill Science Large breed puppy and sometimes mix teeny bit of chicken with his dried food and he has tripe sticks as a treat... never ever table scraps... he is only 6 months. Thanks guys

You should try to use something else as treats, dogs aren't supposed to eat any processed human food, and although cheese isn't really processed its still not a great idea to give it to dogs. Don't know if that's the reason behind his loose stools the only thing you can do is stop the cheese completely and see if they firm up!

Well i dont think its the Hills ive not known many people to have a problem, have you only just introduced him to it as introducing a new food can sometimes cause tummy troubles. Try substituting the cheesy treats with something a little bit healthier like small bonios which are very good at binding poos and help teeth too.

Also cant imagine the tripe sticks are a great idea.... lol

But stick with the occasional bit of chicken (BOILED not roasted or fried) and the regular biscuits, cut down on the treats for a while and make sure he stays properly hydrated.

I have always been given to understand that cheese is binding so I wouldn't think that was the cause of him having the runs. It could be a mixture of foods that may be causing it. You could be adding too much protein to his diet. If you are giving him a COMPLETE meal he doesn't need anything extra as a supplement because it is scientifically balanced to give your dog all the nutrients he needs. I'd go easy on the tripe sticks or any raw hide chews. These affect my dogs in that way sometimes. I stopped giving rawhides years ago as I think they are very dangerous for dogs and can cause them to choke,

Dogs of this age tend to graze on anything and everything they can get hold of. I have two five and a half months old puppies which I kept from my last litter and they are always coming in from the garden with leaves, twigs, clumps of soil and grass in their mouths, resulting in runny poos the next day. They all grow out of it but it is a slow process and a worrying time for us owners.

The only time I ever give my dogs cheese, and even then nowhere near as much as you are giving yours, is when they have loose bowels as I've found that it binds them.
Whilst tripe is good for dogs and they do enjoy it, i've found that it can also make them a bit loose and I would suspect that's what causing the problem, though the chicken could also be a factor.

Contrary to popular belief Milk can give your dog loose stools Cheese can bind them. Unbelievers check it out with your vet. Don't know why your dog has soft stools, have you noticed any thing in them, blood or worms? If you have given your dog something they aren't used to eating that could be the cause or maybe she ate something in the yard. If it keeps up I would suggest taking her to the vet. I would just keep an eye on her today and see what happens.

Yes mostly yes because most dogs or should i say all dogs are lactose intolerant, so don't feed him that anymore he can find all the calcium he needs in hes dog food, use doggies treats, like dingo or some other.

Yep dogs do like cheese. But as the previous poster said they can't digest it properly and it will make them sick, although I do give my own dog occasionally a tiny pinch of cheese as a teat-but that's it-nothing more substantial cheese wise. So I would definitely avoid giving your six month old dog cheese!
