Sunni and Shia fighting are a part or a strategy called DIVIDE and CONQUER.

The British were infamous for doing this.

They knew that if Muslims are united then they will be booted out the same way they were in the 1920's

You bomb one side and blame it on the other......... then goto the other side and do it over and over.

I don't think you can be both. I think rather that you can be neither. Muslims aren't supposed to split themselves into groups, so I think you would be better off not joining one or the other. However, there are a lot of "rules" that are based on various schools of thought and ahadith, etc., so it can be very difficult for someone knew to Islam to know which beliefs to follow. For myself, I think the best thing is to follow the Quran. Do the 5 pillars. And when you need guidance for something, seek out all possible answers and then compare back to the Quran and whatever matches up best is the right thing. Most of the problems are indeed political, but things got more complicated as time went on. My fiance is from Iraq and there are both groups there in high numbers. Until recently, there was little or no conflict between the two groups there. People didn't care if someone was Sunni or Shia and they inter-married, etc. The important thing is that everyone agrees on the Prophet (pbuh) and on the Quran and on the 5 pillars. These are the basics of Islam. Until you've mastered these I don't think it's worth worrying about the rest. Once you get there, go ahead and read some Islamic history to help you understand what has happened. ibn Kathir (Kauthir) is pretty well respected by everybody and may give you some insight.

When Jerusalem was about to handed over to Muslims, (Muslims did not want bloodshed in sacred city), the Christians of the city put a condition, the Muslims Caliph, Omer Bin Khattab, (may Allah be pleased on him), must come personally, and sign the agreement.
Sayedina, Omer, appointed Ali bin abu talib, as acting Caliph in Madeena and visited Jerusalem, by himself.

The Four Friends of Prophet (saw) were all great and most talened persons. Each of them had special qualities, in addition and hence unique in their own way.
Ali(kw) was the most knowledgeable, with profound insight andawareness, Omer(ra) the most impartial, fair and righteous ruler, Usman (ra) the most obedient and Abu Bakar the most loyal and most wise.
After Prophets departure from this world. ..these friends of our beloved Prophet respected each other and would consult among themselves, and ask each others openion.
Each knew that the other would never be wrong.
Besides Ail (kw) was the cousin of Prophet(saw) married to Fatima (ra) daughter of Prophet (saw).
The period in question represents the utmost understanding, composure and respect between among the muslims in Caliphet period.

Mr.Lawrence..
I do not think one should use sectarian terms. We are muslims and nothings else. Islam belongs to all and yet it is one only.

I gave a star to the question not the way it was asked.
I dislike people who use fragmentation in Islam.

After All both Omar & Ali (May Allah be pleased with them) are from Ashrathul Mubashireen (The ten companions of Prophet (PBUH) who are assured with the Happy news of Paradise for them). So where are we trying to go another side of paradise by hating them?. One must have to love those whom Allah and His Messenger loved (PBUH). He loved all His companion and said only good about them in his life time.

Allah's Messenger Muhammad, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, used to make the following du'aa (prayer):

"O Allah, I ask you for your love

and the love of those who love you.

And I ask you to guide me to the work

that makes me attain your love.

O Allah, make my love to you more beloved to me

than my wealth, children and cold water."

As shia never existed in the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) time, and they don't follow the way P.Muhammad worshiped ALLAH, I guess they should consider my words and think about it, they might be wrong, but Sunni people are never wrong becuz they just follow what P,Muhammad did
