You tip on the total bill not just parts of it. It's about the service not whether you had a drink or not.

You need to tip for the whole bill. As a former server, I know that in some restaurants that you have to tip out the chefs, bus staffs and others. So while at the end of the night your tips came to $100 you have to tip out the above mentioned 15% so now you are down to $85. Depending on where you live you are only being paid by the restaurant $2.13 an hour so you must bust your hump to make a living wage with your tips.
To all you stingy people out there who don't believe in tipping or tipping very little stay home.

I didn't even know there were people who didn't tip for the entire meal! That's terrible. The server usually brings all beverages, or at least refills them, so why shouldn't they be tipped for that service as well? Also, if you get a discount/have a coupon, people should ALWAYS tip based on what the check would have been at full price. Anything less is just rude. My husband and I don't make a lot of money, but when we're taken care of, we like to reward that person properly.

It is proper to tip on the entire tab. Food, drinks, and whatever else. As a college student I have a good number of friends who are wait staff and they get find it very rude when people skimp on the tip. You don't need to leave a huge tip but it is proper to leave 15%. If you can't afford to do that, maybe you shouldn't order the extras like drinks and desserts. If the service is very poor then you should use your own discretion as far as the tip is concerned. There have been two or three occasions that a someone waiting on us didn't get a tip because of super poor service.

I tip at least double whatever the tax is on the meal, usually much more, thats just the base tip like if the server is not very personable. Then i tip per drink (dollar or two) as they arrive. More when hammered, lol.
If you're a tool that doesn't tip at least those base amounts, stay home and cook yourself.

I always tip the restaurant server. For the whole meal. How much I tip is based on the level of service. To do anything less is bad manners.

And good 'cause I was a waitress @ Chili's and all I got was from 2 to 5 dollars. Sometimes I would get the regular 15% Tip, but usually it was less.

Well, sometimes I tip if there is good service, crabby waitresses dont recieve tips from me. Basicully tipping for me is baised on fast, friendly service. Really the cooks should get like half of the tip money since most people tip baised on how good the food is, tips are more for good tasting food and bad food normally dont get tips
