You first need to find the ECU it is at the kick panel on the passenger side. There is a mode selector kinda looks like a volume knob but with the plastic knob missing. Turn the knob all the way counter clockwise. the car should be warmed up and the engine off but the key in the on position before you turn the knob. There will be two led lights one green the other red The red will flash 1 to 9 times. then the green 1-9 times.
So say you get 3 red blinks followed by 6 green blinks you will have code 36. code 44 means you have no codes to display. Feel free to email me I have the book in front of me and can tell you what your codes mean also you will have to unbolt but not remove the ecu from the car to see the lights, you may also have a 2 position switch instead of a rotational knob, if so slide switch to diagnostic position

The codes your looking for are in mode three. Like the other answer. Turn the screwdriver slot gently to the clockwise and watch red and green flash once twice and three times then gently turn the slot back counter-clockwise. IN MODE#3 the red and green will flash three time each code stored then go on to the next code in order of importance. Key on engine off A/C off too. 55 means everything is ok. Get it fixed quickly Nissan has discontinued stocking parts for cars that old. By turning back clock wise the mode #4 the mode#5 after that turn slot back counter clockwise the codes are cleared.
