My 6 year old indoor male cat has some kind of swelling on his chin, upper neck area. This is the first it has happened and it only appeared this morning. It seems to me like an infection. I haven't taken him to the vet yet because it is an enormous hassle to get him into his pet taxi (he is extremely scared of it).

He doesn't touch the area and does not look as if he is in pain and even if I touch it he doesn't mind at all. It's very noticeable and looks as if he is fat which he is not.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Thank you.

It sounds very much like an abscess to me. Either take him to the vet or lance it yourself. Either way it must be drained. Once it is drained it will *fill up* again. That is because you will not be able to get it all the first time. Apply triple antibiotic cream or ointment to that area. this is sold OTC the name brand is Neosporen.

Is there any oozing or discharge coming from the swelling? If so, he could have gotten bitten (do you have any other indoor cats that he may not have gotten along with? Or is there a chance he could have gotten outside at all, even for a little bit, and gotten into a cat fight with another cat?) A bite is serious and can lead to a bad infection, so he must get to the vet to get this checked out.

If it just "looks like a lump", that "makes him look fat", as you say...PLEASE get him to the vet ASAP, no matter how much he hates his carrier. I don't want to scare you, as it could be nothing, or something more minor, but I noticed a swelling, the way you are describing it, on my 10 year old cat 2 summers ago. It didn't hurt him, in fact, the only reason why I took him to the vet was because I noticed he was losing some weight, but since the lump didn't appear to hurt him, I thought nothing of it.

It turned out to be cancer of the lymph node, and unfortunately there was nothing the vet could do at that stage. My biggest regret is wishing I had noticed it sooner, because I have no idea if he could have lived longer than he did. He was my baby and I still cry when I think about him sometimes, seriously. So, no matter how much your kitty doesn't like his carrier, be gentle with him, talk to him in a soothing voice, and find a way to get him calmly into the carrier and to the vet as soon as you can. I hope everything turns out for the best, I really do.

Cat Swollen Neck

I nearly have to notify the Red Cross before I try to put one of my cats in their carrier, for the loss of blood inflicted on me.

But sorry, it is for his own good, as it seems like an infection that will need follow up care, and only the vet can do the initial diagnosis and treatment. It could be a number of things, including an abscessed tooth. Cats are very stoic, so he might not be showing what he is feeling.

I leave my carriers out at all times, so they don't get tipped off that something 'bad' is going to happen if they suddenly see the carrier.

Your cat needs to go to the vet. To make it easier to put him in the carrier, put the open carrier in the middle of the livingroom. Throw some cat treats inside. If he likes the treats enough, he'll go in and then you can shut the door. This works best if you do it at other times when you don't intend to take him to the vet so he won't always associate it with the vet.

Cats can become very ill, very suddenly even though what you observe doesn't seem to be bothering them much. I'd not delay. There is also something you can get called CALMZ which you can put in your cat's food to mellow him out and make him easier to handle.

It could be a mouth infection.
Like if he lost a tooth or something,
my cat just got over one..
and id take him to the vet,
we waited and ours ended up with a uninary tract infection also.
It might be a hassle but eh, could save you more money then taking him later!

It could be alot of things. Take him to a vet or make a house call if your local vet does that. Abcess, rach, tumer, any one of those. go get it drained.

the only thing i could think of is that he could have a tick?
check the area where it is inflamed . whatever it is i would take him to the vet regardless if he doesn't like the car, it's for his own safety
good luck, hope he is alright
