Perth is beautiful with gorgeous beaches. You can take day trips to see the Pinnacles Desert or Wave Rock or Margaret River. My English cousin recently traveled around WA and they loved it. The East Coast is nice too but it is much more heavily populated.
I noticed some Queenslanders knocking WA which they usually do but in fact Brisbane is often called Brisvegas and the Gold Coast is so tacky you would hate it. If you want real Australia, real natural beauty and not badly done tourist spots then do WA and take some trips from Perth too.
You could go to Sydney>Melbourne>Perth>Broome (for the most magical outback experience of your life between April and November)>Sydney>USA.

Why limit yourself to cities.
You have mentioned "Melbourne/Sydney" and "Perth", but there is so much more to Australia, and WA in particular. Why look at a building when its going to be the same as any other building in any other city in any other part of the world.
If this is to be a "once in a lifetime trip" then broaden your horizons man. Go to Ayers Rock (Uluru), have a day in The Alice, swim the Great Barrier Reef, stay at an outback station, drive across the Nullabor, walk the Bibbulmun Track, go to Kakadu, swim in the NT etc etc etc.

There is a lot to see and do in Perth and Fremantle, but they are the big urban centres of Western Australia. There are some magnificent places to visit throughout the state. Head to the North West, such as the Pilbara and the Kimberley regions, particularly places like Exmouth to see the whalesharks and other natural wonders (Bundegi Beach is paradise). Head out to visit Karijini National Park to see the beautiful gorges that contain some pretty amazing waterholes and wildlife. Head to the beautiful SouthWest for great food and wine and the last of our WA forests. There's the excellent surfing down there if thats your thing.
I'm from Fremantle and recently got back from a 3 month road trip up North. It was fantastic, I'm heading back up there for work soon so it does get under your skin. Perth probably has one of the largest ex-pat American populations in Australia if thats anything to go by. Similar climate to US cities like San Diego, but still laid back and reasonably easy going people.
Western Australia is a huge state with diverse people and environments, and just like the large ex-pat population, when you vist you will fall in love and might not want to leave.

Both are super Cities. I would choose Sydney being more populated transport is made easy to get to places. . You can't compare sydney to the rest of Australia as the Country is so big and diverse. Don't know how long you will be here for . You can pick up some cheap domestic flights with jetstar or Virgin Blue if you have time to go elsewhere. While in Sydney though there is a lot to explore and you may like a day trip to The Blue Mountains.

Hi. I'm an American, a native of San Diego, and I currently live in Perth. Come for a visit! I'm sure you'll love it. The Aussies who've written about the area have good recommendations. You'll find plenty to do. And "Wait Awhile" (Western Australia) should sound very appealing to someone from crazy SoCal.
Cheers.

Mate, in all honesty, Perth is a nice but there is not much to see there for tourists.
Most tourists visit Kings Park lookout and maybe Rottnest Island, that's about all there is.
If you go to Perth, you only need a couple of days there.
You would be better off doing Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and maybe a stop off on the Gold Coast.
Brisbane is much nicer than Perth.

If you are going to Sydney and Melbourne, you will realize that it is a waste of time to go to Perth. Travel to Perth is like traveling to Australia from another country, time-wise. And there isn't much to see.

of course there are tours to fit your itinerary
you could fly
sydney>melbourne>perth>darwin>alice springs>brisbane
then back to the USA
have you checked with your travel agent? you won't find a tour on the web i don't think - you have to find a private operator.
enjoy your stay in oz

If you want to see Perth, then do it. Yes, it is a long way away from the Eastern states, but if you do not go then you will spend all your time wondering...what if?
