Fans are cheaper and less effective in 90+ degrees, AC get the cooling job done, but makes your electric bill go up...

Get the system that best suits your home and its locale. There are many AC units that are quite efficient, but honestly, it's best to use a mixture of cooling devices, both passive and active.

If you employ good insulation in walls and windows, wind and/or solar powered attic ventilation, and even some of the more "radical" methods ( even though these are proven techniques used for hundreds of years before modern AC hit the scene) of passively heating and cooling your home, then you can decrease the amount of time your AC is running...and save some BIG,BIG BUCKS.

And also know that you are decreasing your harm of the environment...

If you really want to cool down, use a combination of both.

I keep my home at 70degF, plus I run ceiling fans. After a hard day at work, there's nothing like cooling off with a brew in the old homestead.

If this globe keeps warming, you will have to use air conditioning to cool the 150 degree air during winter. I'm not sure what we are going to do during the summer.

Also, if your air conditioner is actually cooling (which means the coolant hasn't leaked out) you are not contributing to the last great scam - the ozone hole. How come we don't hear anything about it any more?

fans are better because even though they are wasting energy the AC units are at the same time wasting energy as well as destroying the ozon layer with the chemical inside it. although i do have to say it feels better....but the realy question is: is it good for our planet? or how will it effect the earth?. fans arent nearly as bad as the AC

AC of course, if you're going to use the power, then you may as well get cool properly.

A very small air conditioner or two and a ceiling fan works best.

fans use less energy. Better insulated houses would help immensely (insulation works for cold outside as it does for hot outside).
