They are apart from each other as they each have their own living space and entrance. They are separated by doors and walls. Two units are called a duplex, 3 a triplex, 4 a fourplex, any more than that an apartment complex.

The "apart" is throwing ya? I used to lease public housing efficiencies (studios barely big enough for one person) and a few of the residents called them "compartments." Funny, but sad.
