I think the kind of people who say that are usually very genuine, so you should take them at face value. Perhaps it is a spur of the moment thing, but no less genuine because of that. And if you need a prayer or two, I'll put you on my list. :-)

It is something definitely a christian that prays will tell someone. It is not a spur of the moment thing cause christians are prayed up and stays ready - a weapon of defense.

For the most part, it's a way of being kind. I work in a hospital as a hospitality representative and when a patient ask me to pray for them, I do it right then and there. That way they know I'm sincere.

It depends. Some were simply brought up that way...its sort of like saying 'let me know if theres anything I can do' when you KNOW there isn't. Others are saying it sincerely, as prayer is a part of their lives.
Either way, its their business-and responsibility. So, just say 'thank you', and go on with what you were saying.

Some people do mean it, and others say it and then just offer a kind of general prayer for 'everyone who is sick or troubled'.
As the recipient of someone else's good wishes, however, does it really matter?
At worst, they are offering you their good wishes and kind thoughts ~ why not simply leave it at that?
Cheers :-)
