First of all you need to know the definition of the words you quote.

In my opinion, they are saying that an opium den, where you go to get high on drugs (smoking only) is the same as people going to church on a Sunday.

This topic can be very complicated, as many people have their own views and will not be moved away from them.

Opium is a drug, can be harmful, and is not legal, but can make you "high"

Religion is a belief, can be harmful, is legal, and can make you "high"

So why, you may ask, is religion harmful ? You only need to look at the religious based wars throughout the world.

Why is opium harmful, over time it destroys the mind and body.

You pose a very good question. Without many weeks study, I would be unable to give you a true answer, so I hope the bits of information given above, help you decide what view you take.

Indeed it is. This means that those people who believe in this man-made philosophy, take great comfort in religion because it gives them peace of mind and a purpose in life which they may not have had before.

Other people are born into a religion and are brain-washed into believing in resurrection, life after death, 72 virgins waiting for them in heaven, coming back in another life and so on. All of this is so much hogwash, designed to capture minds and suborn them into supporting one or other of the established (or even new) religions by donating money or giving of their time or working to grow the belief by converting non-believers.

For your work, research the source of the words, use this as an introduction expanding on the reason for it being said, discuss the impact of religion on the world for the last five thousand years, discuss the far eastern religions, the middle eastern ones like the muslims and compare these to the western religions like christianity and its many off-shoots into Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, etc.

Constantine was the guy who assembled the Bible and thereby gave the world a body of authority on which to build religion. The books of the Bible were written by ordinary men who wished to impart what they considered to be their wisdom or experience to others for their own reasons.

Believe it and you will believe anything. The same goes for the Torah and the Koran, and the others.

Good luck.

Karl Marx remark: "Religion is the opium of the people" is somewhat true.
It seams like a bad bad blame to religion at first glimpse but if you think that in the past opium was used in medicine in cases of sever pain, you may realize the similitude between opium and religion: opium treat great body pains, religion treat great spiritual pain.

In the context of Karl Marx's time it certainly was true.
The workers were exploited by the rich. Often they did not have enough to feed themselves and their children.
The rich used religion as a way to keep the poor from rising.
Religion defended the status quo. If you were poor, God had wanted it to be so. Religion was the sleeping pill for the poor.

Have a nice day.

I think karl Marx made that statement. Yes, I agree. Remember, religion is a man-made organization with some human's views on how ones life should be lived. Many religions use fear to control people. And the almighty dollar reigns high with religions! Self-righteous men brainwash other people with ideas that ultimately control them, much as a drug does. Until human beings stop buying into the religions' views, and live their lives as the powerful spiritual beings that they are, religions will control people as surely as opiates will.

I can definitely believe that ,because you can get Bang ka parshad in Lord Shivas temples in India. So that is the reason
they deliver Bang(opium) Ka parshad in Lord Shivas temple.
It is cool.

It is certainly addictive. Otherwise intelligent people seem to believe the most extraordinary things when it comes to religion which they would not apply to other aspects of their life.

No I don't. I have faith in Jesus because I met with him, not because I'm afraid not to. Christianity is not an easy faith to follow, Jesus warned us it would be tough and he wasn't lying (he can't lie actually!)

I doubt it. Why would I believe Karl Marx's rantings. I've read his garbage and all I can say is Hitler was a student of his.
