Antibiotics work by what is pharmacologically known as "competitive inhibition". The antibiotic gets partially digested and releases a substace that almost exactly has the same chemical structure as the nutritional requirement of the specific bacteria. This substance is swallowed by bacteria. The bacteria are deprived of nutritional requirement and die. For example Thuberculous bacillus needs Nicotinic acid for survival. INH is iso nicotinic acid hydrazide.. TB bacilli swallow INH and die of Nicotinic acid shortage.
Some antibiotics prevent division and multiplication of the bacteria by preventing needed substances from being used by bacteria.
That is why antibiotics must be given in correct doses.

several abtibiotics(Ab) works on different locations on bacterial cells to inhibits bacterial growth and actually kill the organism....Roughly they are devided into this category :

- for those Ab that inhibits nucleic acid synthesis (eg. sulphonamides, quinolones, nitromidazole ect.) they make sure the DNA synthesis will not occur

- for those Ab that inhibits cell wall synthesis (eg. cephalosporin, peicillin and othe B-lactamase:carbapenem and monobactam) they prevent the cross linkage between the linear peptidoglycan polymer chains that make up the cell wall

- for those Ab that inhibits protein synthesis (eg. aminoglycosides, tetracycline, macrolides, chloramphenicol) they are selectively toxic to bacteria because the bacterial ribosomes consist of 50S and 30S subunit while mammalian 60S and 40S

After being taken oraly, the Ab and even all medicines, were about to be absorbed and metabolised. soon the particles works on bacteria cell as above...hope this will a bit help =)
