Yes definitely go to a gun shop.

The last time I got mine it was 7 years ago. I had to fill out forms, and pay for a test booklet and a video test. It basically consisted of me sitting in a room in front of a TV watching a full two hours of gun safety videos. There was also a written test option which was quicker but you were not guaranteed to pass. Also if you had a Hunter's Safety cert or were active military or PD you were excused from further certs.

A few years back the laws became more strict for the safety requirement and you have to jump through a few more hoops now for a handgun safety cert, and the old certs became null and void for new purchases. I believe hunters and military personnel have to do the same - I am not sure about PD, but I would assume they do not. For any long guns it would be the same. Of course as always you have to fill out paperwork that is registered with the DOJ and pass background checks before you can pickup any purchased handun, and you will have to wait the 10 day cooling off period after you pay as always.

We have plenty of gun laws. If we spent more energy enforcing them - especially with regard to criminal possesion - we would be in better shape. Emotional arm flapping about how we need more restrictions is simply a waste of time.
