my 12 year old daughter is in all AT classes at her junior high and was in the Talented And Gifted program from 4th to 6th grade. She isn't slipping academically but she has started getting into vampires and she will listen to alternative music on the computer all day and will only really talk to me when she wants my opinion on a song. She has been sleeping alot during the day and stays up until about 1 am. She spends lots of time on her website (acryingcloud.piczo.com) and has said that her head hurts. her birthday is on the 5th of August and she isnt really excited at all for it, she says she doesn't want a party. her idol is Pete Wentz(from Fall Out Boy) and she is always talking about him, she actually went online and watched an interview about when he attempted suicide by overdosing on Ativan. Ever since she has been talking about suicide and death. i don't want to take her to a doctor until i get some thoughts on whether or not she may be depressed or suicidal. please help me!

Would you please read what you wrote and we read? You really think this behavior is normal for a 12 year old? That she is talkind about suicide and death is a clue here something is not right do you not think? My daughter got into the goth thing when she was 16 years old. We took her and got counseling for her and treatment. When she was 18 years old she ended up in lockup for psychosis. She never has been the same and is and adult now and still is occupied with things that give me the creeps. Get her help, and the sooner the better. If you actually took away the computer and the ability for her to hear the music she is listening too, she would actually go through withdrawal.

Someone mentioned cutting? She did that too.

Honey if you are concerned then you should talk to your mom about it. I will say however that you are going through a lot of changes right now including changes in your body/hormones and probably a new school, right? Many of the feelings you have are common - needing more sleep, having more interest in music, experimenting with your look. You are trying to find out who you are and where you fit. You are not a child and not an adult. It is a hard place to be. Emotions run high and don't always make sense for girls your age.

Now wondering if you are depressed or suicidal is of more concern here. Just because you are curious about it or wanted to watch an interview about it doesn't necessarily mean that you are headed in that direction. The fact that you are asking us to help you figure it out tells me that you need to talk with your parents or doctor about this and figure out just what is going on.

Good luck.

She might not necessarily be. She may be a victim of "emo" culture. If she watched a whole interview on someone she looks up to (not a very good person to look up to, mind you), she may be influenced by his every action. However, if she's talking about suicide and death, you better be concerned!

By the way, you also should get her to rethink her taste in music, because it is probably made of not-very-talented musicians who all sound the same. Seeing that she likes Fall Out Boy, she probably has a terrible taste in music and probably also like Panic! at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, as well as other untalented musicians who have low self-esteem. Have her listen to some jazz or something that displays musical prowess.

I definitely think shes very depressed and suicidal from what you've said. The quicker treatment is given to pple experiencing this, the better. You should take her to a doctor. Possibly a therapist could talk 2 her.Teenagers are in a very vulnerable state, trying 2 fit in, etc. Its not always easy. I think that you should talk to a therapist or psychologist about her role model. People sometimes imitate their role models. Maybe you could help her find a better more emotionally stable role model. Best of luck to you !!!

At first it sounded like she is sleeping late because she is staying up late but now talking about suicide and death, she is ether looking for attention or needs some help. I would side on the side of caution and get her some help ASAP. Kids go through so much more pressure and stuff now in school. Get her a councilor.

Whether or not she's actually depressed if she's looking at suicide in any way shape or form at all you need to have her talk to someone. Find her a councilor, and see that she gets the helps she needs.

Better to have her talk to a councilor and it not be needed then risk the alternative

It sounds like it.

Has she cut herself? Just one sign. It is supposed to ease the hurt.

If you think she may do herself some self harm, take her to the doctor, but don't for heavens sake let the doctor stick her on some form of medication. Believe it or not, this actually gives them the strength to really do themselves an injury.

When you are depressed, you lack self worth, and it is exacerbated if there is tension in the house, so its not just case of being nice to one person, its being nice to everyone.

at twelve she doesn't have the concept of mortality down. Her hero has attempted suicide and she thinks that makes it attractive or even romantic. She could try copying him, not realizing the permanence of death. I would skip the doctor and take her to a child psychiatrist just as quickly as you can.
