people give away free dogs ya.. ussually large mixed breeds who have health problems, not housebroken and untrained.

nobody gives away a small free purebred that is well behaved.

If you cant afford it, you cant afford a dog... "free" dogs typically do not have any vet care. You would do better to try www.petfinder.com and find one for adoption that is completely vetted.

vet costs:
exam fee, charged every time you see the vet $30-35
Shots, given yearly $15-30
Rabies shot, given every 3 years $5-15
heartworm test, reccommended yearly $30
microchip $35-50
registering microchip $15
spay/neuter $65-250, depending on size, age, sex, and what vets charge in your area
heartworm preventative, reccommended monthly, year-round $3-7 a month
flea preventative, given monthly during flea season $10-15 a month
hopefully your "free" dog is not heartworm positive.. it can cost $600 and up to treat heartworm.
"free" dogs may come with other problems that may need medical care.. infections, worms, etc.

A dog from a rescue will have all of the vetwork done, and have been checked over before it goes to a new home.

other expenses:
grooming.. maltese are a breed that require a groomer.. needed every 6 weeks, can cost $35-65 each time
licence.. renewed every year $10-15
food.. varies, depending on the brand.

Wow, you really need to grow up and learn a thing or two about owning a pet.

First off, if you don't have enough money to get a dog, how do you plan on paying for his veterinary care and food? You will also need to buy a bed and/or a crate and some toys. I have heard it costs somewhere in the range of $1000-1500 a year to have a dog.

Second, small dogs bark. A lot. What are you going to do about that? They need to be trained and boy dogs like to lift their leg and pee on things.

Third, small dogs live 10-15 or more years. Are you going to make that long of a commitment?

Maybe you should save some money and do a little research before you get a dog.

Check the papers and the sides of the road, there are people giving away puppies EVERYWHERE. Just DON'T be picky. Not biting and barking alot is something is has to be TAUGHT, they're not natural traits, all dogs are a little nippy at times and bark unless trained not to, though some dogs are quiter and calmer then others. And forget about finding a Maltese for free, unless you just get freakin freakin lucky.

People will tell you to be careful when getting a free dog cuz it could be a problem, which is the chance you take. Though the dogs I've gotten for free turned out to be the best dogs in the entire universe.

I can definitely understand wanting a dog. The problem is that if you can't afford money to buy the dog (many shelters have dogs available for a donation of $100-$200) then you probably can't afford to take care of the dog. They need food, shots, trips to the vet, heartworm and flea preventitve, a license, leash, collar, toys, and more.

I adopted a dog for $150 and spent much much more on all of those things then I did on the dog.

first you need to make sure of how you are going to get the dog. (try and find one in your area or close). search around on google. look in your newspaper's classified ads.post an ad asking for an unwanted small dog in your newspapers classified ads, but there may or may not be a good reason WHY they dont want them. theres also classified ads online. With the biting, i think it mosly depends on training it not to rather than the kind of dog. Unless its aldready grown. The more the spicific details you want, the less likely youll find a free dog.
most if not all breeders will not giveaway thier dogs. be patient. dont give up. but dont just sit there and wait for something to happen. do everything you can to get a dog youself.

Umm..sorry to break it to you but dogs bite and bark-its just how you train them.
And malteses ain't cheap- the least I have found was one for $175.
Wait a bit and save up.
also search on craigslist.com= pick your state then city then go to pets.

you also might want to consider a cat-those are easier to find free or close to free.they are also independant and easy maintnance.

other than that, you are asking for a miracle.

also, search classifieds and talk to everyonw you know who is into dogs or knows people with dogs. especially your hairdresser or manicure-ist, they know alot of people and can get a word around. thats how i found my cockapoo-she wasn't free but came with everything, just for $75.

Good Luck and this will take time, be patient and htink it through-pups are a big responsibility!

You cannot afford a dog! Don't forget dogs do bark especially small dogs! You need your parents permission! Consider rescuing an adult dog as there more stable, but remember no dog is free, vets fee, food, grooming, worming etc cost need to be included. other get a fur real toy pet!

First of all, this isn't craigslist. Yahoo! Answers is not the place for buying, trading, and selling.

If you can't afford to pay an adoption fee, how do you expect to be able to afford vet bills? What happends if your dog has an allergic reaction to something, and his face becomes swollen, at midnight? Emergency vet's can run in the thousands.

If you don't have the money to properly care for an animal, don't get one.

Honestly if you don't have enough money to buy a dog, how will you afford it? Vet bills, immunizations, food, toys, etc.? No dog is perfect, or animal for that matter, dogs need training to not bite, bark etc. As for the small part, there's tons of small breed dogs. My favorite is the papillon.
