I bought an old bike recently for $10. I want to salvage the frame and wheel only and buy all new parts.. i.e all cables and housings, brakes, pedals, crank arms etc.
How much might that cost me? And is it worth it?

I assume the bike is just a department store model. It's value is next to nothing. However, it would be valuable as a learning experience. I don't have a clue as to your age or time and $$$ available though.

I did this same thing as a teen and had a blast. I ended up working in a bike shop and even though I'm a professional (in work) it was the best job I ever had. 30 years later I still love cycling and bikes.

I have a good idea, try to purchase a couple junkers for parts. Use the best frame that fits you. Use the best parts off of all the bikes. Maybe buy new cables or a couple parts that you still would need. Paint the frame and fork your favorite colors, try a fade paint job or some other wild paint scheme. Practice on the other frames till you get it right before doing your "real" one.

How much this all would cost you depends on things you haven't mentioned. I custom built up a Cannondale CAAD 5 last year and it cost me a few grand. As a teen I did this with my Schwinn Varsity and it cost me maybe $50.

Were both worth it? Heck yeah!

I don't know if it would be worth it, it depends on the bike.

Unless you're too attached to the frame, or really are into bikes, it will be more expensive than buying a new bike. You could look into ebay, craiglist and other places to buy the pieces you need.

One of the things you might encounter is that some standards might have changed from the time that frame was made and today. Maybe you would need an old fork, or trouble finding a bottom bracket, or something, I don't know. Just consider that.

It's completely worthless unless it's an antique or you have had it for generations rather buy a new one because the bike will be completely new and good.I hope you understood what i said.
