Hi, I have been to Iraq once with the army, I recently found out I have asthma I can't run 1/2 mile without an attack, and I am on a nonruning profile. My unit is deploying to Iraq I want to go with them. Can I be deployed?

Typically you are medically discharged or retired depending on the medical condition. For asthma you may be unable to deploy and will get a medical board hearing for if you are fit for continued duty. This means they can discharge you early if you are unable to perform your duties.

son, you can be deployed with any problem. Yes it is true you cant get in the army with asthma, but once you are in, they aren't going to let you go until you repay them for the training you recieved. A condition must be suddenly and completley debilitating or extremely hazerdous to your long term health for the military to not send you. I'm sure your unit will find an "alternate duty" for you if you are in a combat MOS. Have fun gaurding the DFAC buddy.

More than likely your doctor won't let you deploy with asthma. Esepcially if your asthma is that bad. The conditions in Iraq are not lung friendly. There is dust, smoke, and the physical exertion to consider.

That is up to the doctors.

I was diagnosed with asthma 11 years before I retired last year. I demanded that the doctor place me on an aggressive asthma control program and read up on the tricks to prevent an exercise-induced asthma attack.

My lowest APFT scores were in the 250s and my average scores were in the 280s. (288 for my last APFT before retirement.)

No. Your lucky you have asthma, you dont want anything to do with the military or the government. It corrupts the human element in your mind. The governments a bunch of War Pigs.
