A tricycle with 2 good pedals.....seriously folks, buy as big a car as you can fit onto your block so when not if but when they wreck it, there is a better chance of them surviving. I have put 4 kids through teen years and the first girl totaled 2 before she was 18 and a third just after her 18th b-day, The second child, a male totaled a mini pickup before 17yrs of age, the at 19 was T-boned and totaled a very nice show S-10 low-rider, The third child, a male is a racer, can't keep tires on the old chevy pickup it has seen 3 bumper to bumper mishaps. And finally #4 child is another female, she totaled my Acura Integra and rolled my Jeep Grand Cherokee, now she drives my 1983 Ford pick-up....I only use it to haul rocks, trash and dirt, pretty durn rough truck but she adds oil EVERYDAY and drives the wheels of it.
GET THE A BIG VEHICLE!! and suck up on the gas to keep 'em safe.

> He wants something small, sporty [and fast]
Don't they all. Sporty and safe don't go together. Pick one.
Ray and Tom, the two guys who do the NPR show "Car Talk", both recommend a 20-year old Volvo. They are built like tanks and even if he wants to do something stupid, with just 145 HP and 3,000 pounds curb weight, he can't.
They had a call a couple of years ago. A lady wanted to know what they thought of buying a BMW Z-3 for her teenaged daughter. They both said "She will die" at the same time.
16-year olds do stupid things. 16-year old boys do really stupid things. My brothers did. (I was a perfect child, naturally, except for getting smudges on my lace collar when I went to Sunday School.) (grin)
If you buy him, say a Miata convertible, he will feel the urge to see what it can do. In an old Volvo he won't.
I'd suggest that the next time you see a highway patrol officer in a donut shop, offer to buy him (her) a cup of coffee in return for horror stories and advice about 16-year olds and cars.

Get him a USED CAR, honey! I'm not kidding!
Get him something BASIC and cheap. Under $10,000 if you can. Your insurance is about to go ballistic.
If he proves himself, then you can always help him get an upgrade when he enters college.
He has a lot to prove... that he has the ability to pay attention, that he has the ability to maintain it, that he has the ability to make good choices.
Statistics and also personal experience of friends and relatives across the board indicate that the kid... specifically ANY BOY... is very likely to TOTAL the thing within a year (if not months), either from a confluence of circumstances or from just doing something stupid. A 16 year old is not all that conscious of his decisions or ramifications thereof.
Talk to your insurance agent.

OMG, who is the idiot that is going to spend $30k on a sports car for a 16y/o?! I had freaking 7 wrecks in <1yr when I 1st got my license. Get the kid a 10 y/o Toyota. Then when/if he wrecks it, you can just go pick up another one. Save the $30k toward his college. BTW, if you let your kid get his ego tied up in his car this early, he will likely spend his whole life broke b/c he is always chasing the next new car. Please read the article below, then read "The Millionaire Next Door" by Stanley & Danko. If you are still foolish enough to do this, you are beyond help.
