Hi, The problem is not the operating system, in fact its your laptop. The laptop you own is very outdated to be playing Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty. In addition, you would have to have a powerful video card to handle the games. Lastly, having only 20gb or 220gb is pretty bad for memory management. Solutions: Buy new laptop Buy new RAM, graphics card, and hard drive Install Windows 7, XP wouldn't do much but Windows 7 is amazing.

I don't know Win ME, but I do know that 256 RAM is not very much. I would like to see you add more memory at least up to 512, that is if your computer can handle it and you can afford it.
With 512mb RAM kept reasonably-clean will serve you o.k.. Try these to see if they help speed:
- set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.
- review your start menu – remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis — load games, etc. on an as-needed basis.
- from Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history - you can also set days to store pages in history to 0.
- run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).
- periodically, click Start, Programs, Run — they type ipconfig renew
(that’s ipconfig space renew).
These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.

Probably will. Although, why go with ME? If you are truly concerned about some system speed why not go with 98? Simple, easy, light on resources and does most everything that XP/ME does...
