I got in a car accident a few weeks ago and my white 1994 Volvo 940 was totaled. The whole front right side was bent. We were unijured of course. I had that volvo since I was in COLLEGE, and before then my parents had it. We had been through a lot together. When it was towed away :tear: it had registered 316,000 MILES on it. A FEW minor problems, mostly caused by me when I was in college because I was not servicing it correctly. So what's the point? Well I am looking at buying another '94 Volvo 940 OR a '01/'02 Volvo S40. What does everyone think? I don't want a crap car, and my heart is with Volvo 940. I am sure my mind is made up, but would love others opinion on the matter. BTW, I could have any car I want, $40K+ BMW, Benz etc...but I value money and I think it's hot when people with money drive old cars, it tells a lot about their character. I hate seeing people driving expensive cars who still live at home with their parents. But thats a completely different discussion

go for the 940 there are still many around in good shape you can be selective, or even purchase a nice car that may need an engine or other major work ( [if the body and interior are perfect and the price is low go for it] and you can either do the work yourself or know of a trustworthy shop) let's face it. a decent body with a knocking or blown engine 500 -1000 dollars a properly rebuilt and installed engine 4500 dollars with all extras[fuel pump radiator etc] total 5500 dollars . driving it for another 20 plus years for less than 10,000 dollars upkeep. a no brainer. [this is still less expensive than buying a neon or focus] and you already know the capabilities of a volvo

The 940 Volvo is a great car! We are a Volvo family since 1986 and had a 240GL for 18 years with no problems; it was serviced regularly. I would recommend a Volvo S60. The 940 is a fairly good sized car and in the long I think the S40 will seem small. As to which S60 you have a number of choices. S60 2.5T (210 HP), S60 AWD (All Wheel Drive) (210HP), S60 T5 (257HP) and S60R (300HP) these are all fun to drive and for the money will matchup to any BMW or high European car for alot less money. As how to buy I would recommend a used certified Volvo. 2004 or 2005 will give you even better value then new and have a 6 year or 100,000 mile warranty which ever occurs first when purchased from a Volvo dealer. The years are measured from the original in service and current mileage. For example if the car is a 2004 which originally was on the road in Oct 2004 the warranty could last until Sept 2010. If it had 28,000 miles it would have 72,000 mile to end of warranty. Remember which ever occurs first. These warranties usually have no deductible and cover just about everything. Good luck car hunting!

It depends on the model. If it's a 960, forget it. If it's a 940 then I would have it checked out by a reputable shop that can estimate the mileage for you. Volvos tend to amass lots of miles over their life spans but the red engine models (940 is one) will outlast practically anything on the road. Having the vehicle inspected is money well spent. Of course the owner's asking price should be very reasonable.

If you like the 940 that much, get it. I have an 89 Volvo 240 DL Wagon I won't give up. I know how it is!

i think you answered your own question when you stated "We were unijured of course." i wrecked a 92 740 and it saved my life! i immediatly went out and bought another 740.

well maintained older volvo's are not too hard to find. i would stick with the 940 model that you love!
