I have 2 very active 13 weeks old kittens. I got them when they were 8 weeks old and they were very sick (diahreea, vomiting, etc.) for the first few weeks I had them. It took about 2 weeks and several medicines later for them to stat feeling better. Last Thursday, I came home from being away for a few days for work and noticed that my one kitten (the smaller of the two) had almost no whiskers. The other kitten (the bigger one) has all of her whiskers. I notice as the whiskers start growing out that the ends are bending and then breaking off. The two kittens play very rough and I wasn't sure if I should be worried about the missing whiskers (sick again) or if it could be a result of their "roughhousing". Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Your kitten could have a rex gene, it could be diet, rough play, or even health related. There are a lot of posibilities that a Vet could eliminate for you with a simple checkup.

A rex gene can give the kitten kinky/wavy fur and kinked whiskers that are often very brittle.

Maybe the smaller kitty is still recovering from being sick, or still needs treatment. When we adopted our tuxedo cat, she became very ill & her whiskers kept falling out. The vet said she was *much* younger that we'd been told by the ppl we got her from & that she kept losing her whiskers b/c she was sick & her little body was using all its energy for more important things than whiskers. Sure enough, when she got better her whiskers grew in beautifully & she's now a gorgeous 9 year old girl with long, graceful whiskers.

Thank goodness for people like you - these poor kittens need a loving home and you've rescued them! My kitty lost a few whiskers at that age (and also every now and then these days), but they grow back - she also slept funny on one side, and her whiskers were all bent, too. If you're worried, see a vet - especially since her health in the past wasn't good - they usually charge around 25 dollars for a visit. It's worth it just to make sure your kitty isn't miserable.

Roughousing could be causing the breaks. Or it could be a defiency in the diet. How does his coat look? The problem with loss of whiskers on cats is that it can literally throw off their equilibrium. And cats use their whiskers as indicators for tight spaces. Their whiskers are never longer than the width of their body. If they can stick their head in a space and their whiskers don't touch the sides they know they can make it in or out. Lacking this skill could be a problem for a nosey little kitten.

I would suggest taking your cat to the vet just to find out. More than likely, since they are broken, they are probably just playing really rough and they will grow back. But if your cats whiskers are falling out, that is a sign of sickness and should be attended to immediately.

I doubt it's from roughhousing, one or two whiskers might get pulled out during a fight, but all of them? It might be that the cat has some kind of a skin irritation that's causing him to claw at his face, so check the skin around his face to see if it's red and puffy or anything.
