If it was the head gasket you would have to keep adding a lot of liquid to the radiator. If you are doing that then the oil would have water mixed with it.

Overheating problems list:
1. thermostat
2. water pump problem
( If you have to keep adding some liquid to the radiator)
3. radiator
4. fan clutch
(fan doesn't change speeds based on conditions)

A 2.2 that old could also be a partially clogged radiator. Make sure the radiator fan comes on when it should, 212 degrees. Feel the radiator core to see if it feels uniformly warm across, with a slight drop in temp at you go. If some sections feel really cold to the touch while other area are hot, the radiator is probably clogged.

Don't count out a headgasket leak either. 2.2s were notorious for leaking at cylinders 1 or 4.

Improper mix of anti-freeze/coolant and water. You may need to backflush the system and refill it. A good idea on an old car.
Watch it with that overheating! Nothing , save no oil, is harder on an engine. Also, did you get the gaskets glued down properly and is the thermostat in the proper position? You sure it's the correct one that opens at the right temperature?

Saw a fan on backwards once. Make sure the air is drawn through the radiator. Many stopped up radiators do that. See if it has flow all the way accross the tubes. Too much antifreeze will make them overheat too.
Is the t-stat upside down?
Check for bubbles in the coolant running...........Hdgskt or cracked head.
Put t stat in pan of boiling water and remove from heat. Did it open? A t stat rated too high for car will do that too.

good possibility the water pump. If you have not gotten it to hot you might get lucky. 2.2 s are known for loosing waterpump and then blowing the head gasket, and if you get it hot enough warping the head
