My car was totalled in a car accident about a week ago, so I need to buy a new one. Between the money I got from insurance and money I have saved up I have about 7500 to spend on a car. I'd like something pretty small, and fuel efficient if possible. I don't really know anything about cars so I'd really appreciate your suggestions.

Don't ask people on Yahoo! Answers. You'll get answers scattered all over the board with a vast array of reasons and lack thereof. Here's what you do: Consult Consumer Reports, a non-profit and non-biased organization that rates almost any car, appliance, cellular plan, and almost everything you can think of. You can subscribe to their magazine which has a yearly Autos edition in March/April, or you can look online on their website. Look for one that is recommended by CR (well-performing, reliable, and safe [as determined by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration]), high on the list, high in driver satisfaction, and well-priced. If you find a car that makes all or most of these criterias, that's the one you want to buy. Also, I recommend consulting CR for everything appliance-related that you buy because, obviously, you can't trust claims made by the company selling the merchandise.

I'd go with a Honda Civic or the Toyota equivalent (Corolla, I guess); I personally have gone with Toyota for my last 5 cars because I believe they are mechanically superior. I would say get a Camry, but the Corolla or Civic is more appropriate for your budget. For the amount you want to spend, you will clearly need to buy used; but I think you are always better off buying something at least 2 years old.

Honda Civic or Accord. Toyota Corolla or Camry. All good smallish sized cars, all known for hanging on to value and good on gas.

Don't buy from a dealer however...

The brand of car is not as important as a good car. Find a reputable dealer that you can trust to sell you something that is not a problem.

None. They are all nothing but money sucking death traps. If you can live your life without one then don't buy one.
