Corrections Officer?

What's the difference between a corrections officer and a deputy sheriff working in a jail as far as job duties?

The actual job duties do not differ. THe deputy sheriff has powers of arrest and the corrections officer does not. That is all. Most deputy sheriffs work in the jail before going on the street.

Simple approach to this question: Jail is a "way station" between freedom and sledding fast to the "big house". Compared to prison time served, jail time is short or at best, fleeting. Jail deputies, trained well in many facets of law enforcement, are badged deputies w/ civil arresting powers.

Prison pretty much is the slam squealing brake halt to a racecar ride; the proverbial "end of the road". Exit the car (courthouse) and put on the prison blues.....and get fast used to them: you're gonna be in them for years and years ahead.

Corrections officers don't do police/sheriff's street patrols; they don't normally hold civil arresting powers. They manage a distant, closed off society of prisoners all of the same sex.

Both jail and prison officers perform daily duties of great responsibilities, aimed at insuring inmates live in a clean, sanitary, safe and humane living enviroment. In jail and/or prison, the physical and mental health of inmates is a top priority.

Jail and / or corrections officers all work a thankless job--espicially w/ no thanks (understandably) from the inmates....and evidently from the public. Other than HBO's "Oz".......you won't see a REAL TV program on corrections work.

Same, only difference Correctional Officers at the State level make alot more money.

It depends on the jurisdiction. Some places to CO's are deputies, with full peace officer powers. In other jurisdictions they may only have limited arrest (if any) powers.

A corrections officer has far less responsibities they mostly just watch prisoners.
