Im fostering a dog who I found out had kennel cough. I got the pills to give her when I feed her, so Im treating it.
I have another dog too, and I dont want him to get sick, but I dont want to isolate him from me (he'll get sad.) He's pretty healthy anyways and seems immune to everything, so is there a possibility he might not get it?
I leave the door in my living room open to the outside, so could that help the bacteria sort of float outside instead of staying inside?
And anyways they really arent around each other, they keep to themselves, so does that help too?

Hi. Kennel Cough is certainly a possibility, but these symptoms can apply to a wide variety of respiratory illnesses. He should be seen by a vet. asap. Do not wait until your appointment in 9 days. Vets do not do ellective surgery on sick animals. FYI to all the readers out there. Kennel Cough can be easily vaccinated for as a puppy, and should be done on a yearly basis. Many breeders, and pet owners do not do this, and this is an easy fix to avoid a future issue. For those of you who think your dog cannot get this, think again. Any dog in a public area or around other dogs can get Kennel Cough.

Kennel cough is HIGHLY contagious. It's going to be sad to keep the dogs separate but please do. I've worked in a vet hospital and humane society and one dog with kennel cough if all the other dogs haven't been vaccinated (even when they have sometimes) is a nightmare, EVERYONE ends up with it. My parents bought a puppy that ended up having kennel cough that turned into pneumonia, their other dog got it, my dogs were there ONCE after they had already had the puppy for over a week (had shown no symptoms and had been to the vet already) and BOTH got it even though they had been vaccinated. My one dog ended up being fine, just coughed some, my other dog (bulldog) however had to be on meds for quite some time and he was the one that didn't even play or really socialize with the other dog. I would really strongly recommend keeping them completely separated until the other dog is no longer contagious.

My dog had Kennel cough she was such in bad shape when we got her. We got her from a rescue the breeder was really mean!!

Did u rescue your dog like mine. That should be the reason then cause not all dogs from breeders are very health but Im willing 2 give them a second chance. When my dog had Kennel Cough she had it for a couple weeks or so. Make sure your dog isnt to near your other dog cause i have 2 dogs and I had 2 make sure they werent close together.
Here is a medicine u should get for your dog. Its for Kennel Cough.

Also when I first got my dog she was really shy and she was kept in a crate all day and all night at the breeder. Now she can run around and she is not shy anymore!!
Here is a vet u can try 2 look at

There is no reason to medicate a young (age 1 - 6) healthy dog for kennel cough. It's super contagious so your dog will probably start coughing in about 2 wks.
I worked at a kennel that had kennel cough go through. My dog was the only dog not vaccinated for it and the only dog that didn't get it.

You are doing all the right things. I work at a kennel and know that if you have the dogs get what is called a bordetella shot that helps them not to get it or spread it. If you haven't already i would have the healthy dog get it juust incase. If they are not around each other alot then that is good. Still get the shot:) Well for more info on bordetella and kennel cough visit these websites:

Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs. Dogs who have kennel cough should be isolated so they dont infect other dogs. Does that answer your question!
P.S. Have you not spoke to the vet. You might consider it!
Rest and proper humidification of the atmosphere are important items in treatment. The dog with kennel cough should be confined in a warm room with a cool-steam vaporizer.
Did you know that Chronic Bronchitis can begin as another respiratory infection such as kennel cough.
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! alk with your vet!

Kennel cough is an upper respitory infection and it can spred really quickly. If your dog was already exposed to the new dog than I would watch him closely for any sign that he has gotten it too.
Air the house and trying to keep them apart isn't going to help too much but he may have been exposed already. I'd call your vet and ask them if your dog was in any danger of getting it too.

When I adopted my dog from a shelter she had kennel cough. Even with her on medication I was told by my vet not to have her around any other dogs until the illness cleared up. She was very sick. This illness is VERY contagious. Before you listen to me or anyone else, call your vet and ask him/her. Good Luck!!!

this is an airborne sickness. this makes it highly contagious, because the dogs don't need actual swapping of fluids to catch it.
in addition, there are different strains of it (just like there are different strains of the flu), so even vaccinated dogs may wind up getting it (depending on which strain they are exposed to.)
watch the behavior of both of your dogs carefully. most healthy dogs will recover with time and rest, however, puppies, older dogs, and dogs with a weakened immune system can get very sick and die. please be thoughtful and keep your dogs inside and away from other dogs until the vet gives your dog a clean bill of health.
best of luck

Kennel cough is highly contagious. Call your vet and ask for a second round of the medication so you can give it to your dog. That way, you'll make sure they're both rid of it.
