I got a speeding ticket while on a business trip in Texas. I have a california license, and the car I had a rental car at that time. I asked the officer if the ticket will show up on my record in california. He said that as long as I pay it, it would not appear on my driving record. He did seem very unsure though, which confused me even more.... Does anyone know if it would transfer or not?

Ahhh, wouldn't be simple if you could just forget the traffic laws when in another state? That's what some of these people seem to believe. A ticket in TX isn't a ticket in CA. And why wouldn't it be if it is the same driver involved? It is just common sense.

fewcw has it right. States have reciprocal agreements specifically to cover this situation. The motor vehicle departments tell each other everything! Otherwise a driver could be arrested in 49 states for multiple violations but still have a clean record in his home state even though he is not a very safe driver. The information is shared to make the streets safer.

That is how it is supposed to work. I don't always rely on government employees to do their job correctly.

I dont know where the other answerers got their info, but almost every state has a reciprocal agreement as far as tickets go... This means the info is sent to your home state and the points are put in your driving record. Further, if you dont pay the ticket your license will be suspended in your home state as if the ticket was issued there. There will also be a bench warrant issued in the state the ticket was issued. They will not ordinarily extradite you to the other state unless it borders your own state. And PLEASE dont use the old answer of I did not receive anything in the mail indicating your were suspended. All they (your state) has to do is to send a letter to your last address on record...

The ticket does not transfer. The information that a ticket was issued does. I don't know the details, but I doubt paying or not paying the ticket changes that. I do know that is you don't pay, Texas will suspend you license and California will honor the suspension.

If you pay it, California will never find out. If you don't pay it, Texas will notify California DMV through the Non-Resident Violator Compact, and California will put points on your license as if the offense (failure to pay) took place in California.

So to answer your question, California cannot punish you for the speeding ticket, but they can punish you for failing to pay Texas the fine.

Texas has no jurisdiction over your California driver's record. Unless they kept your license, there is really no reason to even pay the ticket unless you routinely drive through Texas.
