do not stick anything hard down the cast, you can try a blow dryer on cool setting and then some talcum powder or corn starch. Check with your doctor about the powder etc. but you can cause some major skin damage when you start sticking items down there to scratch. It is only caused by her sweating. It is tougher when they are young and not adults., I have seen serious infections from people using coat hangers, rulers etc. Best of luck. feel free to IM or email me if i can help at all

Hi I sympathise its an awful feeling and its even worse for a child.....however you must NOT let her stick anything down to scratch the area......some very nasty infections caused by knitting needles and the like....try cooling the plaster down...when she gets warm the tiny vessels swell causing the itching.....keep her as cool as you can but a hairdryer on cool will help....also try putting her fingers in a bowl of cool water. Anything really that will cool her fingers and so her arm down.
Depending how old she is try explaining to her why she's itching and take her mind onto something else when and while you can.................anti hystermine's can also work but I would try not to go that far.......best of luck....hope she gets mended soon...

Don't let her stick anything down the cast! When my son broke his arm, he scratched inside the cast with a piece of Lego, we had to have the plaster changed because the Lego got lost inside. The plaster technician told me that a boy in our area had scratched inside his plaster with a knife, he had cut his skin and an infection had set in, the boy had to have his arm amputated below the elbow!
You can give your daughter antihistamine medicine, which should take some of the itch out of her skin, but don't let her use anything to scratch inside!

When I broke my elbow my doctor put me in a 1/2 cast made of plaster. If it's a 1/2cast u can take it off for awhile and put anti-itch cream on it or something. If it is a whole cast find something that is long to to reach the itch, but careful that u don't hurt her skin in the process. Worst comes to worst ask her doctor about it. hope her arms feels better.

Well dont use the old trick of using a knitting needle to scratch it,there's been so many write ups about using needles now a days.
Ask your Dr or Practise nurse for advice on coping with this.

talc will stop the perspiation which can lead to itching. i dunno if ur allowed to use a knitting needle or chop stick etc maybe as long as u dont use the point just really gently slide it in and around slowly did u ask the folks that applied the cast? ring them up again for advice they will be happy to help better safe than sorry! take ur lil ones mind off it like every day she manges to fight the urge to itch she gets a gold star applied to the cast and tell alll the family everybody support her and praise her make her feel really special like if she gets 4 or five stars take her for a treat that means something to her that she can remember try and involve her in safe activities that will not endanger the cast etc basically keep her really active not just sitting in front of the telly or whatever get her outside n out and about help her to forget she has it kids are very resilient...dont mention the fact it will itch and she may not even be overly concerned about it herself cos sometimes if u think something will hurt then it will! hop it helps just common sense really let me kno how u get on best wishes xx

Hi
The itching could be caused because the cast is heating the blood in her arm, put her fingers in cold water, common sense dictates how long for.

Don't wait for anything. Call 911 and head to hospital. Just be sure that it's not a simple bruise.

All you can do is comfort her. It's not possible to stop it totally til the plaster is off. Support is all. Take her mind off it somehow. It's not beyond the wit of you.

she's the one that has to cope, not you! Just kidding. I know what you mean. she can try a soft brittle new toothbrush. its easy to get in and its also soft. whatever you do, do not try a pencil, even the eraser as it may cause lead poisioning. good luck and i hope her arm heals fast. bye!
