We don't believe in democracy. Our founding fathers formed our current Republic to overcome the pitfalls of a democracy. Rule by the majority is tyranny by another name. That's why we have the rule of law instead of democracy, something that is unfortunately not taught along with other important civic lessons to our children. I wonder why people are so ignorant of our own form of government, yet they get K through 12 brainwashing extolling the greatness of socialism.
There are a lot of great books on the subject, or you can read the Federalist Papers to gain a better understanding for the reasons behind our current form of government. It's always better to read sources for yourself and make your own opinions. Have you read the constitution? It's not that long, and written in plain English, not legalese.

omg, this is the first time I ever almost agreed with CORAGRYPH, but Winston Churchill said that democracy is, "...[T]he worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."
Might DOES make right, unfortunately, and communism has failed to correct the injustice inherent in any mob-ruled government (to the contrary, it has only ever been more unjust.)

1. Because the alternative is the people having no say in who rules them.
2. Because the alternative almost guarantees dictatorship, whether a benevolent dictator or a tyrant
3. Because as bad as might-makes-right mob (majority) rule is -- the alternatives are worse.
Rinse. Lather. Repeat as necessary.
